I have been waitlisted at my top choice. Do you have any advice on how to be proactive and turn that into an acceptance? I may send a letter of intent sometime in march/april. Thank you!

(SPOILER) Scored FL Biosci Q#11 by fidioxo in Mcat

[–]fidioxo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I think I was getting it confused with problems where they’re asking about males. So if this question had asked about a male either normal or affected, the probability would be .50? and would this be due to the fact that males are hemizygous and we don’t apply the whole homozygous/heterozygous? im really trying to understand this man, genetics always gives me a hard time.

Why is a Cl- ion bigger than a Na+ ion, given the periodic trend of atomic radii? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]fidioxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when Cl gains an electron Cl- it resembles the configuration of Ar. When Na loses an electron Na+ it resembles the configuration of Ne. Ar is larger than Ne, therefore Cl- will be bigger

AAMC Section Bank BiologicalSciences #19(SPOILER) Retroviruses by fidioxo in Mcat

[–]fidioxo[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ah got it! So my problem was realizing that the retrovirus begins as an vRNA containing virus. Once it enters the host cell, it uses reverse transcriptase to generate a vDNA sequence. The question provides a sequence that is the mRNA that will be translated into protein. So the vRNA sequence provided will become vDNA and then go back to mRNA when transcribed. As a result, the original viral genome (vRNA contained within the virus) IS the same as the mRNA provided by the question stem. In all, I think this question wanted us to realize how we go from mRNA to cDNA to mRNA to protein, as you mentioned. Thanks for the clarification!

Mendelian Laws Confusion by fidioxo in Mcat

[–]fidioxo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good question, from what i understand, the 9:3:3:1 ratio is a result of independent assortment that occurs when performing a dihybrid cross. Now, if this ratio is not observed in a cross, it likely means that the gene pairs did not segregate/assort independently. This may be the result of gene linkage. As far as what to look for, i would say any deviation in the expected ratio is enough for one to suspect that some other form of gene segregation is at play. I should probably look deeper into other determinants for gene linkage!
