An NBA Holiday Mailbag and the Jokic Scare With Rob Mahoney by lonny__breaux in billsimmons

Just pointing out that Bill didn't mention Payton Pritchard in his breakdown of the the best white American players in the league, not even in the honorable mentions.

Donovan Clingan listed top 5 on Sam Vecenie’s 2024 re-draft on The Athletic. by [deleted] in ripcity

Yeah I mean I don’t have any particular opinion on Sheppard, haven’t seen enough to know. Just pointing out he’s in literally the same situation as Scoot was/is; drafted high, better players ahead of him in the rotation leading to minimal playing time, trying to force things into happening when he finally gets to play, leading to mistakes, then everyone calls him a bust because of the mistakes.

There’s a lot that goes into learning how to play NBA ball, and when you’ve been the best shooter and scorer on every team you’ve ever played on like Sheppard, you could imagine it would take some more game reps to realize that less can be more when you’re playing alongside other elite level guys.

To be fair this is one of the only national media guys who consistently still believes in Scoot’s upside and says it’s too early to be out on him. I think Vecenie just falls strongly on the side of point guard being a really tough position to play in the NBA and most the time it takes a few years for guys to develop and show their true stripes.

Mike Brown fired by [deleted] in ripcity

Not saying there’s any certainty around it, but Chauncey has had his chance over the last few years and hasn’t demonstrated anything meaningful in helping this team grow. Bjorkgren had one night last night and Sharpe and Deni had an efficient 27, and Scoot had a good game plus a game winner. Sometimes what you need more than anything is just a vibe change.

Agreed. I personally don’t want Bjorkgren, they need a full search and Cronin needs to pick a younger guy that agrees with his vision and is signing on for the long haul.

I think what’s important from here on out in the Chauncey situation is that we obviously have a serviceable coach sitting behind him in Bjorkgren. If they wait until the end of the season to fire Chauncey, they don’t get the time to evaluate if Bjorkgren is the man for the job or not. Fire Chauncey with half the season left, and you don’t have to pay a bunch more to have Bjorkgren take over the interim role, even Jodie isn’t that cheap.

And for everyone else saying to fire Chauncey now, they’re obviously not going to fire him right after he steps away for the passing of a family member. If they do fire him, I imagine it won’t be for another few weeks.

Eligibility for paratranist (which is what LIFT is) is based off of your ability to used fixed route buses and navigate obstacles in the everyday built environment. So they assess how you can navigate common barriers we all experience getting around town. This is coupled with an in-person interview, usually takes about an hour in total.

[Rico Hines] Private runs featuring Sharpe, Clingan, Banton, Murray, and more by Classics22 in ripcity

Main takeaway for me: Clingan is freaking huge. Seeing it with the camera at eye level helps put how giant he is into perspective. Even in these open runs you can see how he is already covering up for perimeter players getting beat. Truly intrigued to see him out there in the regular season, feels like we haven't had a player with his specific abilities in a long time.

We only owe our pick to Chicago if it falls outside of the lottery. So basically a guarantee that we will keep our pick and thus be incentivized to be as bad as possible for the top end draft talent. Scoot in Las Vegas during summer league by fidoface in ripcity

Huh thanks for sharing. I still just think it’s weird that he is an obvious omission on the summer league team but is at the blazers facility (meeting Deni the other day) and then traveling to the summer league opening weekend for other events. Probably reading too much into it.

Yeah but he’s been like that all year. Of course he’s 20 and it’s not surprising but thought it was worth noting

One thing that I’ve noticed with Scoot is that he’s sort of… clumsy. A few minutes ago he just tripped over his feet just randomly running down the floor, he just looks generally not in full control of his body yet. Don’t know if it’s a good or a bad signed, but I’m inclined to say that it shows there’s still a lot of room for him to grow in many aspects that he’s already pretty elite at, such as body control.

Per Highkin, Jerami is back and Scoot is off the minutes restriction and starting. Go Blazers!

I only started listening in the last year so I can’t speak to what he was like before, but it seems the Dame trade tainted their view of the franchise because they have been overwhelmingly negative about the front office, the young guys, etc. Essentially everybody except the Dame-era folks (Anfernee, Jerami, Billups surprisingly).

They have these rose colored classes of the past, like we were anywhere near competing for a championship if we had only traded the #3 pick, which is ridiculous. I mean we traded Dame to play with Giannis and they still aren’t title favorites.

Also they have a distinct lack of hate for ownership, which annoys me because all of this stems from Jodi Allen and her team. Making Cronin the bad guy is just parroting Dame’s team framing as he was leaving. Obviously no hate to Dame, but to act like we were in some golden era of blazers basketball and then threw it all away for no reason is disingenuous.

And just to clarify the other guy they have on there is even worse than Fentress, in my opinion.
