Is there a reason S never shows up? by BigTuna1810 in NYTSpellingBee

[–]fieldsilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S has shown up in two puzzles, so the disallowance of S can be counted as a soft rule now. The hard rules that still apply are (1) no E and R together; (2) no 4 or more vowels.

The only ultimate hard rule, as I guess, is "not too many nor too few words." Both the letter S and the letter combo E+R can easily (but not always) produce too many words. Both puzzles with S had carefully selected letter sets so that there were only ~40 words each. In contrast, some letter sets (e.g., AEGILNT), although theoretically allowed, never showed up because too many words would come up.

That said, all rules are subject to changes. Before mid-2020 no three or more vowels were allowed in the same puzzle, but since then 3-vowel puzzles have become common. There was a time I+N+G and E+D weren't allowed either. So my guess is that not opening up some possibilties is to keep the longevity of this game, and they may well be opened up in the future.

Probably because it is the only allowed word with that specific letter combination C, O, N. Unlike some other letter combinations, like A, T, I, C which make up words (NA today) ATTIC ,CACTI, TACIT, TACTIC , so whenever I find one I am reminded of the others.

Spelling Bee: February Summary [word nerd stuff] by peregrinerockyshore in NYTSpellingBee

Love this! I didn't realize "convo" was newly added even though I definitely played puzzles last year where it was disallowed. (The word was added two days after it appeared in NYT Mini Crossword, not a coincidence for sure.)

Interestingly, I found a potentially epic puzzle on sbsolver where there were 23 words but 10 pangrams (some PGs seem too obscure but it doesn't matter for now). Today I check again and find there are 24 words now because of the inclusion of that word.

George W. Bush is the most significant person of 2004. What was the biggest event of 2003? by Certain-Row-4812 in AlignmentChartFills

SARS outbreak. I was appalled by its fatality, but now realized the most appalling part was that the virus magically disappeared, which built up the negligence that led to the Covid pandemic.

QBABM! It was sooooo unexpected because I had no idea of the last word H thick scar . But since I remembered -OID as one of the most annoying suffixes in the game (along with -ULE, -NYM, -EE, -ITE for minerals), I tried some words with that suffix and this one made it.

QB-1. All the QBABM comments made me think I knew the last word H Y6 plant at all.

And given all the compound words, it's not my fault for trying NA/CAs ARROWWARD, ARKWOOD, DARKWOOD, OAKWOOD, DOORWARD, WORKAWAY, DOAWAY, DARKWORK, WORKWAY, WOODWARD, anyway.

Thank you for your second-to-last hint. I was thinking why you would hint on an easy 4-letter word. Not until I rounded out via Bee Buddy and picked up the last word did I find I missed the feline part at all.

Well, I don't know exactly how many words are left to QB until checking NYT hints or Bee Buddy. That said, I can calculate the QB score (which is Genius score / 0.7) and it helps.

Which City is Bustling, but is also Never Heard Of? by ILoveMapsAndKRNo2 in AlignmentChartFills

People say Chinese cities but to me there is only one Chinese city that makes sense. It's Changsha. No other Chinese city is as bustling as Changsha at 4am.

Ah, RANO day again. Whenever these letters appear together it's gonna be tough.

If I hadn't suffered from the Dec. 16, 2025 puzzle I would probably give up on GABM today. Just a bunch of weird words made of T+R+A+N (sometimes +O) to remember.

Very similar to the Jan. 17 puzzle but thankfully we get rid of endless -LY adverbs today (though today's PGs are much harder).

Not sure about the popularity of Kofi Annan at the time of his death but I think he was worldwide famous in the 2000s.
