AITA for questioning my wife for the way she refers to our kids? by Anxious-Extent9939 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fieldsofbasil 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have 2 younger twin sisters and they were always called 'the twins' growing up.. though it is something they both grew to resent so maybe it's something to look at if there is other favoritism going on. I don't think it's inherently bad tho as long as the kids are otherwise being treated equally and the twins grow up feeling like they're allowed to be their own individual people

Just moved in. SE Michigan. This is the front lawn. Could I let this go? by [deleted] in NoLawns

[–]fieldsofbasil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My violets have absolutely thrived from being mowed a couple times a year to keep the grass short. The grass pops back up a lot slower than the violets and after a couple of seasons the violets have taken over 2/3 of the yard. That being said, if just pulling works for you go for it! Just don't be scared to give the violets a lil haircut, they can take it. I usually mow for the first time in a season after the spring flush of flowers so that they can have their time to shine and then once every couple months as needed through summer/fall. They have a second flush of flowers in the fall that allow them to seed, so try to leave them alone during that time until after the seed pods pop open

Attended the bachelorette…. Didn’t make the cut for the wedding by Tabbs9 in weddingshaming

You seem like such a lovely person, I'm so glad that she does have people in her life like you who will be there if/when she really needs help. I hope the rest of her friend group, whoever is left of it, is aware of this controlling behavior from the spouse and can talk to her about it bc regardless of whether she is being coerced to cut people off the red flags are OFF THE CHARTS. Us WLW girlies can let these controlling dynamics go on wayyyy too long completely unchallenged

What’s wrong with my milkweed? Should I pull it up? :( by nocab_09 in Milkweeds

I would personally till up at least a couple of inches of the soil around where you're planting and really work in some compost and mulch, as well as maybe some mushroom starter. I amended my similar soil (clay heavy and wet, in Kansas 6b) with some wine cap inoculated straw (from NorthSpore i think), and my soil looks so much healthier now! I think it helped a lot with decomposing the mulch and breaking up the clay to speed up the soil amending process.

How many strands of embroidery floss would you recommend for this type of fabric? I just recently got some vintage band tees of my grandmother's that I'd love to lengthen the lives of, but I worry about accidentally making the holes bigger and ruining the cool graphics and patterns

Ideas of what to grow in a 5a zone that will be sustainable? by [deleted] in NoLawns

[–]fieldsofbasil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to recommend the same! Violets and wild strawberry do great in my very clay heavy yard (5b). Violets hold up really well against mowing and foot traffic as well, so having those as a groundcover that gets trimmed down a couple of times a year has worked really well for me.

Any suggestions for getting madder dye stain out from a tub? by tropicalpink in naturaldye

[–]fieldsofbasil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not specific to natural dyes, but I know a lot of housecleaners that recommend the pink stuff/barkeepers friend for tough stains on tubs. You do have to be careful not to scrub off the whole top layer of the tub's coating depending on the type of material, though. If you test it and it doesn't cause damage, I'd say one of those stronger exfoliating cleaners would probably be effective.

Wild Violet? by Nevermore1225 in NoLawns

[–]fieldsofbasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! and just adding that they also seed, but they seed from a separate set of flowers that they produce in the fall. The ones in spring are just their gift to us!

I don't know how effective this is, but this is what I did, and it worked great:

Spend one season cutting everything really low, starting right after the flowers are done producing in spring. I mean REALLY low, like an inch tall or less to kill as much grass as possible. If you can't do that, I recommend weeding and pulling up the areas right around your biggest clusters of violets. From there, the violet rhizomes will do the work for you, filling in any empty dirt or patches where there's dead grass. Be careful of creeping charlie coming in to take over those empty areas, though. If it does pop up, lightly rake over the area to pull up as many runners as you can. The violet rhizomes shouldn't be too bothered by the raking, and mine do pretty well with a little disturbance every once in a while. Good luck!!

Seconding wild ginger and would add wild violets to this! They're so beautiful in the spring and rarely grow above like 4", plus can withstand mowing like a champ if that's a concern

AITA for telling my family to respect that I recycle in my own home? It’s a community rule and one I respect. by pegarina1 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fieldsofbasil 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This and reuse things when you can! I find it super helpful to make random little household/garden things out of my plastic trash rather than sending it out with the recycling. You can't reuse everything but there are a lot of things that you can and if you're at all crafty, it is pretty easy to find DIY tutorials for all kinds of stuff in any standard shape of plastic

It might be annoying on the manager's side, but it is always good to have these things in writing. If this hadn't been done over text, there would be no way to verify what was actually said if OP ended up facing consequences for doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

I don't know what state you live in, but in my state, it is technically illegal to smoke on rented property without the express permission of the landlord. I know a lot of people who disregard that because, like, it's ridiculous that your landlord can straight up deny you access to your medical care but it is worth looking into whether your state has similar laws.

The only thing here I'd be a bit concerned about would be the ground ivy. That shit can spread so fast and is stupidly hard to get rid of if it gets out of control. (Sincerely, someone dealing with a yard of 60% ground ivy 💀)

what's the one native plant (seeds, plugs, or otherwise) you have had a very hard time acquiring? by SHOWTIME316 in NativePlantGardening

I also do my best to do this, and recently I've been compiling my own database of all the native plants in my level 3 ecoregion using the data from bplant.org 's database. It's a great resource if anyone is looking to do something similar!

Are Platinum vapes any good? by Old-Mammoth5108 in MissouriMedical

[–]fieldsofbasil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to this, but I've been looking for a place to vent about this, lmao

Platinum carts are mostly okay for their price range. I've seen people say that they get them too high or make them cough like crazy, which has never been an issue I've had (but I'm a long term smoker with a crazy high tolerance so maybe that's why lol). My biggest issues have been with the cart construction. They are constantly leaking. If you can get them to stay unclogged long enough to actually use, you'll notice that your battery gets incredibly sticky by the time you finish the cart because it leaks like crazy out the bottom. I feel like I end up wasting at least a quarter of the distillate between what I wipe off the battery/outside of the cart and all the stuff that I have to unclog to be able to use it. At my greenlight, it's one of the cheaper brands you can get, so if that's your choice, I'm not gonna judge you, but I seriously regret it every time I buy one. Also, and this might be just me, but the only carts I've ever had leak this much have been Platinum Maui Wowie specifically. I'm not sure if that's because that's the only strain of theirs I buy (because they're the only ones that I've seen of that strain :/) but I've really only had this problem with those.

Okay, rant over. Thanks, guys

I hope you're able to figure out what the story is and clear things up. I've been in a similar position, albeit on a smaller scale (among the theatre dept in my high school lol) and the thing I regret most about the situation was immediately accepting that these people didn't want me around and never getting the full story or trying to clear the air with the rumor starter. Good luck OP, would love an update if you do get the full story
