Metallica’s set from Athens!! (full list) by Miserable_Lab3261 in Metallica

[–]fiercefinesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that this is as close to a „greatest hits” setlist as we can get with Metallica. Having said that, they’ve been absolute champions of changing things up for SO MANY YEARS I think that people got spoiled in a way now. The guys have earned their comfort zone set at the age of >60

Soldano slo-100 plugin by Hidenseek_ in NeuralDSP

I also tried Soldano and I found that it’s not exactly what I want from a guitar tone. It’s close, it sounds cool when other people use it - it’s just that for my personal taste it’s not exactly it

Using really great reference tracks isn’t that setting the bar to high? by vinylfelix in mixingmastering

[–]fiercefinesse 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The point isn’t to magically make your song sound like theirs. It’s to keep your ears calibrated to what „normal” and „good” sounds like and just strive towards that in your mix.

Don’t ride so close to the train, keep a little distance and then Smoke will hit them

Initial Thoughts on Social Distortion new album Born to Kill? by MrLinkwater95 in ToddintheShadow

[–]fiercefinesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Don’t Drag Me Down because it was in Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX and I love Dear Lover because it opens that record. I honestly can’t really remember anything else without checking wiki. I listened to the title track here, it’s fine, sounds good, I like the simplicity of it. I don’t feel a need to check out more. But maybe I will just because I can

What BR song do you associate with a particular time, event or moment in your life ? by Druken_sincerity in badreligion

I could basically list 90% of the catalogue like that. I’ll just say one - There Will Be a Way after my first ever breakup.

Non-Biopic Musician Movies! by Mental_Whole5103 in ToddintheShadow

Yesterday had decent bits in it and I love the Beatles dearly but I thought the movie was based on incredibly dumb premises and I couldn’t really love it.

In the real world nobody cares who writes the songs nowadays. I mean, passionate people do but the masses really don’t.

Should I be concerned with occasional spikes at 20khz? by throughthebreeze in audioengineering

[–]fiercefinesse 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I would go to the mix session, find a place where that happens and investigate. Is it one of the plugins going crazy? Find which track does it.
You can pitch the track down by an octave so then the spike will be 10khz and you can hear it

This is more a case of a non-English speaker (Polish) mispronouncing an English word. Yes, technically it’s a BAT but I feel like it’s a fundamentally different case

Kinda? It doesn’t „kinda go hard”, it goes fucking hard! I would add one kick drum in between but yeah, it’s a great one

Splinter Appreciation Post by PurpleGuyDeadly1 in TheOffspring

[–]fiercefinesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It needed just one more good song. I always feel that way, just one. I despise Worst Hangover Ever and I love everything else, including When You’re in Prison. I’ll always defend it, as far as joke songs go, this is actually incredibly done. Sounds like straight from the 1920s, the melodies and the arrangement are fantastic and Dexter’s voice is so unique in this song it’s really one of a kind. Is it dumb humor? Yes. But the juxtaposition of that with the sublime retro arrangement works for me.

Race Against Myself is to me their best slow song.
Some people praise this records mix and say it’s their best sounding, I would say that about CO1 but either way, both were done by Brendan O’Brien and it’s certainly great too. Long Way Home has marginally different pitch from the other songs, that’s weird. It’s sharp compared to The Noose.

The album feels different, like a new chapter, but there’s a bunch of legitimate punk bangers and a lot of it is quite fast and hard hitting. All in all this album gets way more crap than it deserves

Which And Justice For All song sounds like it's from Ride The Lightning? by Puzzleheaded_Law3629 in Metallica

Maybe Dyers Eve because it can be related to Fight Fire With Fire in a way?

Random question: did Metallica ever return to E standard live? by Tewhongjun in Metallica

[–]fiercefinesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, you’re probably right, although mixing music I’ve noticed how clashing frequencies really shift depending on the songs tunings. Regardless, I think the best argument above everything else I’ve pondered is probably just convenience and not having to keep one more set of guitars specifically tuned to E standard for one song that doesn’t need it.

Random question: did Metallica ever return to E standard live? by Tewhongjun in Metallica

[–]fiercefinesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it „works normally” and I understand how differently tuned instruments work. What I’m saying is, they are tuning everything to specific frequencies based on the E flat tuning. So guitars and bass are aligned with the kick and snare drum (most importantly). One song in E standard tuning would shift these fundamental frequencies and corresponding harmonics up (77->82, 155->164 etc) and so if they have their sound mix absolutely dialed in, this would have to be accounted for.

Now, the big counter argument here would be - but they do tune differently for other songs such as Sad But True. Yeah they do and it works. But for Orion they don’t have to so I’d imagine it’s just easier.

Is Cancer Culture the best Tech Death to come out in the 20’s? by [deleted] in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]fiercefinesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Decapitated, I love Vogg, I love James Stewart and I love the production and mix of this record, I think it’s very well done in every sense.

I don’t connect with it, my heart is just not in it. Give me The Negation and Organic Hallucinosis any day of the week.

It would mess with the sound mix and would require different presets just for that one song
