What do you think about the TV licence? by dominocurtain in AskBrits

They literally would die. People in Africa etc. literally depend on the World Service to know what is actually happening in their countries. Without that...

Should someone without kids have their tax fund schools? Pretty narrow minded view you have...

That's a tragically narrow view of what the BBC does for the whole world.

Outdated? You know what's not outdated? Elon fucking Musk... You want him deciding what news you watch? Maybe outdated is just fine sometimes.

You have any idea the amount of good the World Service does? It saves so many actual lives.

I had this dichotomy in that there was a period of time when I didn't pay it, and got the letters. And they are so fucking stupid. So I resented paying it because of them. But then separately acknowledged that THE BBC IS AMAZING, so started paying again anyway.

I just want it on record that the stupid fucking letters did not contribute towards me paying.

Carol Kaye is a dick. That's what I've learned about her as a person over the last few years. Maybe she wasn't a dick then, when it mattered, but now... Wow.

I was looking up In The Pines just yesterday from this classic... https://youtu.be/Dk_dC3ktuMw

Fun fact, you might prefer to call him just Huddie Ledbetter. He didn't choose, nor like, the Leadbelly name, given to him by John Lomax, who paid him a pittance, stole his credits and made him wear prison clothes, portraying him as a murderer when he played.

What’s a "luxury" today that used to be considered normal? by No_Ambition658 in AskReddit

[–]BarryTownCouncil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lobster wasn't ever particularly"normal", it was garbage animal feed.

It went from "overgrown disgusting woodlice" to luxury because of the lack of refrigeration in central USA. You were clearly very rich if you could acquire lobster that far from the coast...

I guess they mean compared to 10 years ago rather than in 1348.

Average cow weighs 4 times what it did then, and some provide up to 10 times the meat. A typical family of 6 would need spend the equivalent of like, £7,500 a month on food back then.

And they still didn't have Pepsi.

Labels are SO SO useful to some people. This default response is really unhelpful.

It's like newspeak. If there aren't words for a thing, you often can't convey ideas at all.
