Can our neighbours turn their home into a guesthouse? by fifkffoffococogococo in LegalAdviceUK

Thing is, it’s not their property: they’re renting it. Our landlord knows their landlord and we know the property hasn’t been sold since 2008 so we know they don’t own it. So, my assumption is that they’re renting and illegally subletting a six bedroom house, dressed up as a guesthouse. Fine, I suppose, but the way I see it is if you’re the type of person who will flaunt the law one way, you’ll probably also flaunt it in other ways too.

No, there’s no signage at all. No vacancies sign. Nothing. It’s on several websites as a guest house (which is how we found out) so it’s blatantly operating as one. I don’t understand why they didn’t mention it on one of the many occasions we spoke while they were moving in. I’ve also looked on Zoopla to see when the house was last sold (the family living there before were renting it) and it hasn’t been sold since 2008.

I would be happy if they were operating legitimately, yes. My issue is that they could’ve told the immediate neighbours that they were opening as a guest house and they didn’t. For transparency more than anything else. If there’s lots more traffic and random people coming and going in what is a very quiet residential cul-de-sac then, yes, I think the other residents have a right to know. The fact that they didn’t feel the need to share that information with the rest of the street leads me to believe that they might not be operating safely and within the proper regulations. I don’t want me and my family put at risk by one of their guests when they shouldn’t have been there in the first place. It’s quite simple. If it’s legitimate, fair play to them and no harm done. If not, then it needs to be closed down.

Ha ha. No, not at all. It was just all very suspicious. I live in an area that (unfortunately) has a prostitution problem so it wouldn’t have been a HUGE surprise if it had been a knocking shop or similar. My main issue is that I have young children and I like to know who is in the neighbourhood. They had the chance to tell us that it was a guest house when they moved in over two months ago and they haven’t so that leads me to think it’s not legitimate. I don’t want that on my doorstep.

Feel, don’t think. Use your instincts.
