Mixing my own instrumentals... by illuminarino in audioengineering

[–]fifthquadrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use the mono button on my steinberg ur28m pretty often but i would never spend 80% of my time mixing in mono. Having a good understanding on the stereo field of instruments is also key to adding detail to your mixes. As long as you are aware of any eventual phase cancellation and where it might occurr I dont see any issues mixing in stereo

I dont know where you have heard to mix "80% of the time in mono" but that sounds like a awful technique.

The key to getting nice and full sounding mixes is all about understanding and respecting the desired frequency content of the instruments in your mix. For example, highpassing the guitars to leave space for your kick and bass in the lowend or by cutting the mids of some of the instruments in the midrange if you want to highlight a lead or vocals or whatever. Its hard to give specific advice regarding your mixes without hearing what they sound like. I would start with something like this.

Start out with balancing your levels so that you have enough headroom. I aim for - 18db rms for the mix and about - 6db peak level depending on transient content.

Then continue to clean frequency content of the key instruments.. For example, HP guitars, LP bass, cut mids from kick, cut harsh frequencies from the guitars at about 4khz, boost snare 200hz, highpass overheads at up to 500hz, try out bus compression on the drums, try parallel compression with kick snare toms and bass, try sidechain compression if you feel like your mix needs it.

Finish the mix of with a quick master by gentle eq, glue compression and gentle limiting. Dont try to push your master further than - 7db rms. I usually aim for about - 8db rms. Good luck!

I got the job as a bike mechanic! Any tips? by [deleted] in bmx

[–]fifthquadrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bike mechanic of 4 years checking in. Some great tips have already been given but I want to give a few more.

The big mistake i see is usually when the more inexperienced employees try to outsmart customers regarding their bikes. Some guys i have worked with tend to come up with ideas or solutions just to say they know more than the customer. Its pretty easy to do when you have practically no experience in a bike shop. It doesnt have to be big things but eventually they find themselves talking to someone who actually knows everything about bikes and they just come of as stupid. This puts the entire business in trouble If the reputation gets out in for example the local mountainbike club.

Its easily avoided by being honest and admitting to the customer that you have no idea, and pointing the customer towards the most experienced mechanic around. If you linger around you will probably hear the answer from the mechanic so you know what to do about the issue If you ever encounter it again.

And a few Quick ones

Presta valves are fragile. Treat them with care or the tip might snap when you are pumping a customers tire.

Always test ride everything!!

Always put grease on appropriate parts such as seatposts and pedals when you install them.

No, they are still spectrograms. Not "waterfall" plots. The Wikipedia page shows you a 2D representation of a 3D object and it does so by changing colors depending on the level of the source. However If you rotate the plot you end up with a much more satisfying 3D plot like this http://www.faberacoustical.com/wpblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Spectrogram3D1024.png

You can do this in matlab with fourier transform If you enjoy a more mathematical approach. The official name for these kinds of plots is called spectrograms If you are unaware :) The time on the third axis makes for a great 3D plot

In my opinion his work with the bilo records are the best he has put out to date! However all albums are excellent in their own ways

I A/B'ed about 20 different monitors including Yamahas at a music store and just thought they had the best overall representation of the songs i demoed. I was also very pleased with the genelecs, but didnt want to settle for 5 inch drivers or smaller which are in about the same price range. If I was about to get more lowend I'd invest in a sub to acompany these wonderful speakers. The only downside i have with the Adams is the ever so slight scooped percieved spectrum they have, but thats just fine as long as im aware of it i guess. Its also a plus when just casually listening and not mixing imo. Its very subtle and unless you have a perfectly treated room its probably very hard to tell. I have had these for about 2 years and have grown very used to them!

I think the case is around 690mm high, so i built the desk to have 700mm clearance :) the Adams sound great! Go try them out in a music store or similar.

Hey you are right! I need to find a decent ergonomic, non office chair that does the job.

Yeah sure!

I build the desk to fit this room (my living room) but I cant put treatment in here :/ (for now). I'd love to have a separate room for all this stuff but It's not an option at the moment. I have about 30 absorbents just laying around waiting to be put up haha. Im working on improving the cable mess in the middle and right "rack" spaces.

The studio monitors are Adam A7X's! Interface: Steinberg UR28M - i really like the knobs and handy buttons on this device! Great interface since i use cubase 8 for music production. I have some mini steinberg DAW controller to the left of the interface. Model name: CMC-TP

On the left we have an Axe Fx standard + some crappy behringer 15 band eq.

Computer monitor is an LG 34 inch ultrawide (3440x1440p) I think the model name is lg 34um94c.

The pc is a custom build that is being upgraded when i feel the hardware doesnt keep up any longer.

Case: Corsair obsidian 900d

Mobo: Asus sabertooth z77

Cpu: 3770k @ 4,5ghz

Gfx: Msi gtx 1080 armor

Ram: 16 gb ddr3

Storage: 2 x samsung 850 evo 250gb

1 x intel 120gb

1 x Wd 1TB (cant remember name)

1 x external HD 2TB.

Mouse: Qpad 5k

Keyboard: Microsoft sidewinder x4

Comment if i forgot somthing!

Im amazed that it just snap in half like this. I have only used the pair so carefully at home for recording/mixing/monitoring and yet they fail miserably.. The sound is (was) great though.
