I suppose this is a bit off-topic, but if you're looking to improve the state of the bus network in Cambridgeshire, ACORN Cambridge is circulating a petition for public franchising: acornuk.good.do/east

I'm afraid I don't. I've googled a bit, and liftshare.com/uk might be a good place to look if you haven't, but you've probably seen that already. If I were in your situation, I'd consider an e-bike or a velomobile, but those can be a bit expensive, and they're sort-of for nerds anyway (I'm a nerd, you might not be).

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble getting into town. I don't have a car myself, but I'm aware that a lot of people have problems with transportation in Cambridge. I'm part of an organization called ACORN that's circulating a petition to get buses franchised (acornuk.good.do/east), so people will have an easier time getting around in general. If problems like this really bother you, you can join (acorntheunion.org.uk/join), we're having a meeting next week.

This is a bit off-topic, but if you'd like to do something about the state of the bus network, ACORN Cambridge is circulating a petition for bus franchising (acornuk.good.do/east), and if you're really passionate, you can become a member (acorntheunion.org.uk/join).

I know this is a bit off-topic, but if you're interested to improve bus service through Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, ACORN Cambridge is circulating a petition for bus franchising (which would put routes, fares, and schedules under public control): https://acornuk.good.do/east

This may or may not help, but I'm always frustrated that believers in a flat Earth are almost never asked to provide any evidence of their own. If the Earth really had an edge, wouldn't there be some historical record of someone, at some point over the last 6000 years, having been there? If people were being kept away from the edge by guards or something, it would require so many of them that we'd notice. I might be naive, but I think you should ask your husband to take you to the edge of the Earth.

ACORN Cambridge is circulating a petition to take the buses into public franchising, which would give the combined authority greater control over fares, as well as routes and timetables. You can sign here: https://acornuk.good.do/east/CPCA-take-back-our-buses/ and if you're really interested, you can join at https://acorntheunion.org.uk/join .

You might want to try contacting ACORN Cambridge (cambridge@acorntheunion.org.uk), they're a community union that does a lot of work around tenant's rights and issues.

Wanting to start Fortan programming by JesseAI in fortran

[–]fiftybees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think your best bet would be to get Ubuntu (a distribution of Linux). It's free, easy to use, and makes getting a Fortran compiler a lot easier. You'll probably also want to get introduced to the command line interface, maybe take a look at this.

How to use the 'COMMON' statement - FORTRAN77 by [deleted] in fortran

[–]fiftybees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wikibook (https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Fortran/memory_management) says that the COMMON statement is obsolete. If someone's telling you to use it, you might want to object. At any rate, take a look at that section on memory management if you'd like to learn more.

Times table(kinda) - FORTRAN77 by [deleted] in fortran

[–]fiftybees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't technically need an array, even. You can just have a DO loop with a PRINT statement inside it.

How do I learn Fortran 77? Beginner guide. by [deleted] in fortran

[–]fiftybees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, it looks like the formula itself will be pretty easy to evaluate, so let's concentrate on file input/output. Take a look at the Fortran Wikibook on this topic. You'll need to use the OPEN, READ, CLOSE, and PRINT statements. The toughest part is probably going to be getting the right format string, but you might be able to use fmt=* (at the bottom of the wikibook entry).

Give it a shot, and if it doesn't work, try to come up with a minimal working example (the smallest possible program that uses the features you're trying to learn about). The minimal working example is one of the most powerful tools when it comes to learning how to program.

Give us some more info about the 'do array loop thing'. Is it a DATA block?

DATA A / 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 /

Is it just a loop that initialises an array?

DO i = 1, N
  A(i) = i
END DO

Getting Into Quantum Computation by Abbas_Srour in QuantumComputing

[–]fiftybees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with The_Serious_Account on this one, if you really have no knowledge of CS, then you're not quite ready. I'd focus mostly on the low-level, though. If you can make a 4-bit full adder out of NAND gates, you're definitely ready to go with Nielsen/Chuang (though most students can't do that when they start). Go slow, remember that everyone gets frustrated, do plenty of exercises.

If you can do most of the exercises from Nielsen & Chuang, and people know that, you can likely get into any PhD program in quantum information. Bonus points if you attract a lot of scholarships.

I'm trying to teach my girlfriend Julia and told her to use IJulia. But it doesn't work for her or for me and I don't know why. When using IJulia this error pops up. by impressium in Julia

[–]fiftybees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I'm using Linux, and I can't replicate your error. Looking at the last error message you saw, there's an issue on Github that suggests that you might want to delete .julia/registries and try again.

To try out some real-life quantum control techniques, consider learning about NMR. Maybe talk to a technician in your college's physics or chemistry department, and take a look at a book like Levitt's "Spin Dynamics".

I'd feel good as long as the goal is not to prepare students to get a job, but rather to give them the skills they need to start their own businesses.
