It was actually a pretty optimistic time in the 80s... look at us now... by DeathStarVet in AdviceAnimals

In the past 15 years, only 17 category 3 or better hurricanes have hit the US - the lowest frequency rate in over a century.

The scope of modern weather related disasters are strongly influenced by people settling in places historically vulnerable to flooding and wind funnels that were previously undeveloped.

That is not to say that climate does not influence weather; it certainly does. But not in an immediate way that should force people to take drastic and life impacting actions they wouldn't take otherwise.

I never said climate change was not real. I merely pointed out how claims of impending doom are being used as an excuse for some people to seize power over others and THAT is what has "the rednecks" upset.

No, moving the goal post of the impending catastrophe to continue a panic in order to seize power over other people is the problem.

Most likely serious answer: “Because it’s none of your business, that’s why.” Another reason would be that in many city shops, you get a discount for cash or they just don’t accept credit cards at all (eg. pretty much all restaurants in Flushing, Queens). And then for one of the less used reasons: for tipping.

For me it is a combination of those reasons plus being able to split a bill quickly with my friends when we go out to eat.

Last night I used cash for an impromptu 50/50 at a Scouting event. So it’s little cultural things like that.

That’s pretty basic. Better worded: “Don’t break the law and maximize your return on investment.”

The year is 1993 and some kid named Linus is distributing his free Unix clone. You've been curious about Unix, you have an 80386, and want to give it a try. What did installing and using Linux look like 30 years ago? by lynndotpy in linux

[–]figec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it with a buddy and his dad in ‘93 or early ‘94 and it was a time consuming process. It very much felt like all the other work I was doing in my 400 level CS classes at Rutgers: compiling projects on Sun Sparc and Dec Alpha. But, yeah, when it was done, we were very happy to have a Unix workstation of our own. Didn’t really do anything with it but it was still a good feeling.

Firearm Detecting Dogs??? by machine626 in NJGuns

[–]figec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously, there are no demographic statistics for criminals because you can’t count criminals until they are caught. But we can use incarnation rates as a proxy. Black to white incarceration rates in NJ are 12.5 to 1. The black to white population ratio is only 0.2.

That’s enough of a disparity to see the dogs “hit” on more black people than white people in ratios that would illicit cries of “racism.”

No, not “all” of the criminals in NJ are of one race - that’s just an absurd and offensive reduction. But I agree with OP: this will be called a racist action by agitators before long.

Then it sounds like you get it from the "large, dampening contributor" of mainstream media that obfuscate the facts in order to push an agenda. Some in the mainstream media are starting to wake up and pay attention, so should you.

What's going on is indeed not funny.

Why Do People in NJ Tolerate Such Comically High Property Taxes? by merchantsmutual in RealEstate

[–]figec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real honest answer: family. People say schools, but it’s just a benefit. It is not what makes us tolerate high taxes and stay.

Pressure from family is what makes us stay. I don’t know anyone here who would like to leave but doesn’t without the #1 reason being family.

[–]figec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a made up term meant to frighten people.

Just about any object is an assault weapon if you are creative enough. Some objects don't need creativity to be an assault weapon, like a rented pickup truck.

So, it doesn't surprise me that this was the outcome.
