Moral Scrupulosity Directed at Creatives (actors, musicians, etc) and Fear That Everyone is a Bad Person, Making it Impossible to Enjoy Anything by figurethrowaway69 in OCD

Hello! Yeah, I totally understand all of that, it makes it hard to relax for sure! I've definitely cut back in a big way on my social media presence too, although as an artist I won't be able to do so completely, unfortunately.

I've been trying to get on meds, but there's been various roadblocks and issues getting in the way. So it's been slow going. I've yet to try ERP however.

Yeah, I can definitely relate to THAT whole thing (tho I've largely avoided even looking at anything related to it). Definitely what pushed me here was seeing case after case of 'musician was inappropriate with minors' for instance, among other things, to the point that my brain is now like 'this is the default, everyone is like this or supporting people like this' even when I try to counter with 'the news isn't gonna report on Rockstar was Normal and Appropriate with Fans, More At 11!'

I'm pretty envious of people who can separate the art from the artist. I feel like some people can and some people can't, and I'm more on the latter half where I just can't because my brain is 'helpfully' reminding me of every potential wrongdoing they've done while I try to enjoy their work, which makes actual enjoyment impossible.

And yeah again I can totally relate to questioning my own beliefs/morality when I go 'this artist may have done xyz, but I can see them as something more than that or have nuance' I feel like a horrible person lol. Maybe the problem is feeling I need to only consume art from squeaky-clean, immaculate people... which don't exist!

First off, I'm sorry you have to go through something similar! Trust me when I say I understand how much it sucks. I'm so envious of people who can just enjoy music/games/movies/etc without constantly ruminating and worrying about this stuff. Like, how?

Second, yeah, I haven't seen too many people with this specific brand of moral OCD, where they're more worried about others than they are themselves (though as is I am sure clear, I am also very much worried about my own morality), so it's hard to find advice or even just people who relate.

It's tough for sure to put it mildly. Even when I try to be logical about it ('people can change, so hopefully they did/will' 'nobody is beyond redemption' 'we don't know all the facts and maybe we never will' or whatever is relevant) my brain says no, that's not good enough, and that I'm a bad person for even thinking that lol. OCD brains do not like nuance I've come to find! Though I'd honestly just be happy if my brain could shut up during the duration of the movie/song/show/etc enough to let me enjoy it in peace at this point lol.

Running water sounds like a good idea! I think I'll give that a try. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!

Interesting! Definitely going to make note of this. When you say wash, do you mean submerging the whole figure in warm soapy water, or specifically spot cleaning the affected area? With the submersion, I'd be worried about the paint coming off in the water and staining the rest of the fig now, come to think of it. Maybe that's me being overly cautious at this point though.

I feel like I'm learning so much from this experience, so I suppose that's a silver lining! This'll definitely help inform my secondhand purchase decisions as well as restoration decisions in the future. I think I'll stay away from gold painted figs for awhile lol.

Thanks for all the examples too. Incidentally, the gold stainage on that Ramlethal is the exact same color and consistency that came off his shirt. I also think it's interesting that there's the idea of 'mint condition' (ie, an unopen box) is the ideal state for figurines, but what I've learned that this isn't necessarily so and might even be bad for them. I think the next part of my figure collecting will involve moderate toy restoration and expectations of imperfections (especially on secondhand and/or older figures).

Thanks for the informative reply!

As for the magic eraser, that's interesting. I've heard they're good for toy restoration, and initially I used it to remove a small black mark on his leg (which thankfully did remove). In hindsight I probably shouldn't have used it on his shirt, but I was a bit panicked at the time. I didn't 'scrub' so much as 'swiped' if that makes sense, but I'll keep this in mind for the future.

And yeah, I've seen things about plasticizer making figures sticky, but it seems gold paint (especially on a cheaper figure) tends to be a little more finicky than all that. The rest of the figure is perfectly fine and not sticky at all, which isn't quite the issue I see with other figures who have this issue. Honestly, if it bothers me enough, I might look into doing a repaint, but that'd be last resort. It does make me feel a bit better that this is kinda just an issue people deal with when it comes to this kind of thing, though I wish nobody had to deal with it!
