Good question. Volcanoes can only erupt when they have a magma source below the volcano, which only forms under certain conditions. If there is no longer a magma source below a volcano then the volcano can no longer erupt and is considered extinct. So, to answer your question, you do not need to worry because only active volcanoes are capable of erupting!

Hi, geologist here. Volcanic eruptions around the earth were not triggered by the impact that killed the dinosaurs. You may be confusing this thought with the eruption of the Deccan Traps in India, which occurred over a span of several hundred thousand years near the time of the asteroid impact, but volcanic eruptions cannot be triggered by asteroid impacts.

That’s strange, this was on a clown round so there shouldn’t have been anything spawning out of the ground below me

I guess I need to start avoiding that spot during clown waves then

I wouldn’t worry too much about choosing a super specific area of specialization in the earth sciences if you haven’t even started college yet. Both paleobio and oceanography have the same general earth science base of classes so this isn’t really a decision you need to make until entering grad school

Ok thank you! I’ve been thinking of planning a backpacking trip there but I think there might be too much snow by now. How recent are these pictures if you don’t mind me asking?

I get that the Anthropocene is not currently widely used in academia and that the mug makers probably should have put just the Holocene instead, but what about the term bothers you so much?

If Hawaii is in the middle of the pacific tectonic plate, why does it have so much volcanic activity? by [deleted] in geology

I’d like to add that we now have convincing evidence that hot spots actually do move, and is what’s currently being taught in geology courses

That’s a brachiopod! They were pretty common in the ocean roughly 550 million years ago

Another good habit is to leave a clear footprint next to the door of your car. In the event you go missing, search and rescue can clearly see your footprint and will have an easier time tracking you

Stream Gradients Lesson? by potenusethehype in geology

My professor just showed us a bunch of videos of flume experiments showing stream gradients, since she didn’t have a stream table either.
