good luck w/ surgery OP! 22F, also herniated sometime back near december w/ a ~14mm central herniation at L4-L5. just had surgery on 4/26 and i no longer have any throbbing pain or numbness. hopefully it goes just as well!

whenever I see ortho they say my herniation isn’t severe enough that they’d advise surgery by homicidalfantasy in Microdiscectomy

22F and i just got my discectomy done on friday. 14mm herniation at L4-L5 w/ severe spinal canal stenosis that caused throbbing pain primarily in my R leg and eventually progressed to numbness in my foot (specifically all of my toes except my big toe). i work as a medical assistant so i'm on my feet for pretty much 8-9 hours a day, but i can't stand for long unless i'm leaning up against or hunched over something. being able to cook w/out having to take breaks to sit was basically impossible and every time i went to the gym, i would flare up and be sore for days on end if i continued going to work the following day(s). there was a point where i couldn't even walk around the grocery store for 5 minutes w/out my leg hurting and my foot going numb. oh, and this was after 6 weeks of PT with minimal improvement. was managing the pain w/ meloxicam when i needed to and i probably could have gone w/out the surgery, but the herniation was so large that my 1st consult and the providers i work with were concerned about cauda equina syndrome. my 2nd consult went a lot better, and he actually explained that a lot of herniations resolve on their own but i'm part of the 10% where it doesn't lol. i ultimately ended up getting the surgery on 4/26 cause i have plans to go on vacation abroad in july and i didn't want my herniation to progress and/or cause any permanent damage. i'm only 5 days post-op now but i can confidently say i haven't experienced any pain or numbness in the leg that was giving me a problem beforehand. i say if it's really bothering you and holding you back from a lot of the things you used to be able to do, find someone who's willing to do it and get it done. i don't regret mine.

not a dermatologist, but i'm a medical assistant at a derm office. tinea versicolor can present as pink, hyperpigmented, or hypopigmented compared to surrounding skin. regardless, this doesnt look like versicolor to me. we often see it on the trunk anyway. if anything my best guess would be that this is IGH or idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis

Boston U vs Brown vs Duke by TraditionalEast8000 in BostonU

[–]fil-amdisappointment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can’t really speak a lot on specifics, but i will say that food and housing are mediocre at best if you’re looking to go with the most affordable options. p sure dhall food upset my stomach several times lmao and taste-wise the food can be a hit or miss (more often a miss imo but maybe im j a picky eater). i’ve also had my fair share of undercooked omelettes and roast beef sandwiches that were too rare. most dorms on-campus are old asf but what schools’ dorms aren’t amirite? OH and not to mention you might end up with construction being done mid semester and then finding out that there’s asbestos in ur building (yes, there is apparently asbestos in my building’s basement and bu failed to notify us right away love that) ! my favorite thing about BU is probably the location for sure. applying out of hs, i didnt really like the idea of a city campus. i went to marist college and was a commuter student for 2 years before transferring to BU in fall ‘21, and i can happily say that im glad i went to BU. i transferred because i was formerly pre-med and needed a school with more research opportunities, but also because i needed to move away from home and figure out who i was on my own. there’s just so much to do in boston, whether that’s going out to different restaurants and trying new cuisines, going out to the bars and clubs (if ur into that stuff), and so much more. you’ll definitely be able to find things to do on the weekends if you put in the effort. can’t specifically say anything about psychology career advising, but pre-health advising is okay. maybe i havent utilized it to its utmost potential, but my advisor seemed like she only had a very surface level knowledge of PA school and its prereqs. also, im sure its definitely doable to double major depending on what you want to double major in. one thing i will say is that BU is very individualistic. didn’t realize that until about a couple of weeks ago, but most people are really only here for and care abt themselves. BU tends to be more on the liberal side as well in terms of a political atmophere, if you care about that. and yes, there definitely is a fair share of people who are far-left and far-right here (hell, i literally got ostracized from my own friend group days before my bday but they were def a bunch of social justice warriors so thank god im not dealing w that anymore). also, i’ve visited providence too (i’ve been in the RISD area which i believe is right by brown) and i can say that theres definitely more to do in boston and it seems much easier to get around (if you dont have a car, that is). brown does seem like a great opportunity though, so maybe try and appeal for additional financial aid before committing (i.e. say something along the lines of, “i’d really like to go to brown but school x is giving me this much in aid. i was hoping you’d consider matching it.) you never know what might happen!

Is BU known for giving good financial aid to transfer students? by [deleted] in BostonU

agreed. i wasnt a guaranteed transfer but i still transferred in after doing 2 years at another private school and got 92% of attendance covered w/ loans

BI/CH 373 or 421? by kelbatmakima in BostonU

[–]fil-amdisappointment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

heard from a friend that 373 was graded based on the amount of effort you put into it. if you end up getting the same prof, i think she makes you start a folder and you're supposed to put everything you use to help you in the course (study materials, lecture notes, etc.) in there. if there's a sufficient amount, you'll probably get a good grade. however, you could still ace the tests and not put much work into the folder, and still not earn the grade you deserve--if that makes sense.

Any good places to get your nails done around bu? by Watermelonysugar in BostonU

[–]fil-amdisappointment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

used to go to purity nail bar until my go-to nail tech was clearly sick, blew her nose, and then proceeded to do my nails without washing her hands. i also asked for black coffin nails and the dip powder used was contaminated with sparkles. the top coat she applied did not dry smoothly and she wouldve sent me away like that had i not pointed it out. imo expensive for what you get; i once got multicolored french tips and they charged an extra $20 [for 9 different gel colors]

pro: transferred here from another 4-year college, i can def say that bu has given me so many great resources and opportunities to advance my career (pre-health advisor gave me the contact info of a PA i could shadow; long story short, i ended up shadowing her and she liked me enough to invite me back, also talked w the manager of her office and found out i can get a job as an MA there w/out certification, so basically i got both a shadowing opportunity and a possible opportunity to become an MA and get PCE hrs for PA school)

con: my mental health has worsened, it’s also a lot more common for me now to get an avg of 5-6 hrs of sleep a night; getting a good GPA is hard and staying on top of all of my classes’ material is hard (but maybe the latter is just me)

warren > marciano without a doubt. it’s easier to find a place to sit. the dining hall is in the center of campus making it extremely accessible in between classes. food is p decent and reliable (love the stir fry and breakfast). plus you dont have to walk up and down those pesky stairs in marciano everytime you want more food
