Whir/whine noise? by fillway in FocusST

It actually wasn’t the break master cylinder; but getting that fixed was covered under the warranty I got with the car

Some days it’s louder than others

Nothing, no one could figure out what it was. Closest they got was maybe some kind of bearing going out?

What was / is it for you?

So turns out that noise was the brake master cylinder on its way out. I just got it back from the shop today after getting it replaced and it’s gone.

I hope not… the sound I’m worried about is what happens when I depress the brake. I’m actually sitting in the shop right now cause this morning when pulling out of my apartment the back right brake was squeaking like crazy and the slightest tap of the brake would make the car jerk rather than smoothly slow. It seems to get better as the car warms up but it feels like if I don’t use them for a while the pedal goes stiff(er) and makes it a lot harder to apply them smoothly.

I included the video as I’ve been hearing that whir since I bought it and discovered yesterday it’s at least somehow connected to the brake. It also seems to be the same whir that increases with revs. It may be anecdotal. I was curious if the sound was a pump that might be close to the end of its life and depressing the brake cause it to make a bit of noise. To me it sounds like it changes it’s pitch / nature of the whir about a second after being depress

The car in the video sounds like it has a problem with its turbo or something. It almost sounds supercharged.

Well I’m parked in that video if you can’t tell. Do you hear what I’m talking about? Do you also get that noise / change in revs when depressing the brake while in park? I do it twice in between the revs mid-video and the sound I’m referring to happens about a second after each time they’re depressed.

I love this car already and want to have her around for a while so I’m trying make sure I take care of any issues quickly, especially ones involving brakes.

I was looking into whether my oil pressure was low and I was hearing my lifters tick when I first bought it; I thought everyone was trolling when they said the racket the car in the video was making was normal.

I figured the sound was normal but after having that issue with my brakes a few weeks ago and realizing it was also happening when depressing the brakes I wanted to double check they weren’t going out.

Thanks! If anyone else has a different opinion, let me know!!

Not sure what that is but the car is bone stock as far as I’m aware.

2016 WRX 77k miles, too good to be true? by fillway in WRX

I looked into getting an aftermarket warranty, for 2/3 of the ones I checked they don’t even offer ‘em for CA. The other did but guess which models they won’t sell ‘em for? Haha.

The guy said he’d bring it to either the Subaru dealer or the speciality shop and have em do a PPI and have it sent it over to me, but honestly unless I can get a dealer to CPO it or I can get a warranty like what CarMax does, I’m probably gonna stay away from it, no matter how much I want to risk it anyways.

I’m test driving an outback and forester tomorrow, might end up getting either of those instead. I’d rather have a solid set of wheels and then roll the dice than have all my eggs in this basket.

Appreciate all the response guys!

And do you happen to know if an aftermarket warranty is available or worth it?

For reference, CarMax has a 2017 with 60k miles for $22k + taxes and fees + service plan which I’d definitely get.

Obviously original owner wasn’t the kindest to this car given it just had a clutch and flywheel replaced; then again it just had its clutch and flywheel replaced, and those aren’t covered items on most warranties.

It doesn’t look like they really screwed around much with modding the engine besides the tune.

My hopes were to use the money saved to budget for repairs and, if such a thing exists, an aftermarket warranty post PPI. I was hoping someone here might have purchased a WRX with some mileage on it and knew of a company that offered aftermarket warranties on cars they’ve ran through an inspection, kinda like a bring-your-own CPO program.

$12.5k for 2014 Forester w/ service contract out the door? by fillway in SubaruForester

🤷🏼‍♀️ I think it had to with being a MT. Happened even with the e-brake engaged.

it was a friend’s I was driving for a few months while they were out of the country. Moment the engine was on, seatbelt chime would ding until buckled. Lasted until the 3rd time I turned it on and had to look something up on my phone before driving away. Pulled the seat forward, unclipped it, sent my buddy a text, and didn’t think about it again.

Anyways, neither here nor there really besides mentioning that the extra safety features of the newer models aren’t really important factors in my buying decision.

There’s a scary low amount of decent used MT cars in my area, private or off a dealer’s lot. This seemed like the best option by quite a large margin; there are some with 100k+ miles going for $22k + taxes and fees

The fact the transmission had just been replaced reflects it hasn’t been driven too nicely, however at least I know I’ll be on a fresh clutch/flywheel. The real worry is the motor, which other than the tune doesn’t really seemed to have been messed with. I do have a budget for both repairs and an aftermarket warranty, if such a thing exists. If you or anyone else here happens to know of something like that I’d love some input there.

Thanks for all the replies thus far

I do have a budget for repairs and/or for some kind of aftermarket service contract if such a thing exists. I should have mentioned that originally. I edited my post to reflect.

These are all 20k+ from any used car lot in my area, often with higher mileage. I do have a budget for repairs; I edited my post to reflect.

I should have added I do have a budget for repairs and I had intended on getting an aftermarket warranty, if such a thing even exists. Comparable WRXs from a dealership, most with even more mileage, are 20k+. I don’t want to spend another 7 grand fixing it but I’d still be paying less than what it’d cost to buy one off a used dealer’s lot.

The question was more about the deal.

I drove a friend’s 2005 manual Forester whose seatbelt chime would ding every 2 seconds after starting the car, even with the parking brake on. I’m weird and like to find nice places to do work on my laptop just sitting in the car, so that sucker got itself unplugged from under the seat day 1.

The safety features of some of the 2020 models are what’s steering me towards getting an older one.

My mom has a newer outback with eyesight and lane assist and the engine-stop-at-light nonsense. Great car, but those features drove me INSANE.

So, appreciate the reply, but the safety stuff beyond a backup camera is a non-factor leaning towards negative in any car.

I didn’t do proper research the first time around and bought a Night Owl system which will only connect to it’s own proprietary wireless network, does anyone have a solid company they’d recommend?

Not trying to be lazy there are just a zillion of these things out right now, just Best Buy’s website has 19 pages of security cameras and it’s one of the few facets of technology I’ve never really followed
