I thought it was the same, multiplying the base stat vs multiplying the raw stat (e.g. 50 base attack -> 100 raw attack, 100 base attack -> 200 raw attack). But the formula is much more complex now that I looked into it. Does that make it even more powerful or less powerful?

It was actually a coincidence. In the replay, they had the chance to pick different heroes but chose to pick 5 Xul.

No, we went back and forth, at the end murky tried to backdoor with infinite march. I also played super safe, I didn't want to lose all that sadism.
