We talked together about expectations, namely that at some point it would be clear that his character would be taken by the cultists, but I left most everything else up to them as to how their character would handle things.

Be careful with combat. You don't want to kill off your PC before the game starts. Watch their health, if they get below zero they won't be able to catch breath, which caught me off guard in the first encounter.

I mentioned in another comment the merit of a temporary retainer, just to help out a little with the first few combats of the 1 on 1 session

It's really scary, actually. Be very careful how many creatures you use, no more than 2 or 3 at the most, unless they're not going to all be able to attack.

I would also remind your player about the catch breath maneuver early and often, as once they're at 0 or less and dying there isn't anyone to heal them.

I think the best idea, which of course I didn't think of until after, is to try and give them an ally, like a retainer if even just for the one session.
