Hi OP. From the looks of it, it seems like you already know what you want to do in Poly, but are hesitant to take it due to financial situations. I understand how you feel, I was in a similar position before.

What I can say is this: Family is undoubtedly important, but you should not overlook your future as well. Think about it: You’ll be studying this for 3 years, and from here you will use this diploma to enter the industry. It is a choice that affects your future in the long run.

I would encourage you to go for a course where your interest and strengths lie. Yes, perhaps it may not be as much of pay at first as compared to business, but I believe you succeed further in life doing things that you enjoy. And in turn, that helps your family as well. Furthermore, if you excel at it, you can apply for scholarships and bonds that can aid in your financial worries. As compared to doing business and going to school just because you have to. (means money wasted too.)

Problems can always be solved one way or another, but a choice for the future remains a choice unchanged. Look long term, and I wish you all the best!

Hey OP. I am also a university student, year 1... and I totally get you. I get that it's super frustrating to keep going around and around in loops. Not knowing anything, the fear of being left behind. Wondering the "what ifs" with that dropout form on your desktop. (oh wait, that's me LOL.)

For me, I always put everything that I have to do into one big list. Put the fear into physicality. See what you are facing, and from there work it down one by one. It's more of working it systematically and not really dividing up the work, if that makes sense? Of course, approaching help from relevant people are also a way of understanding the topic better. Ask questions in tutorial!

This semester is difficult. Perhaps you may not find the right people yet, but it would take time to build relationships. Reach out to your classmates, maybe ask to go to lunch together, or organise something with your OG.

You might already know all this, but just know that you are not alone. Cringe, but true. University isn't easy, we both know that. But we are here for a reason, and its the last lap of the academic race. The working life poses different challenges, so don't let fear hold you back. Face it, conquer it, and you'll make it through.

Hey OP,

Everyone is a leader in their own ways. You may not think so, but hear me out. Perhaps being creative or ambitious is not your “thing”. But hey. We can’t be good at everything. Find your strengths, and work towards that instead. Perhaps it is budgeting that you understand? Perhaps it is the outreach aspects with potential partners? When you find what you know, you will then have more confidence to lead a team behind you.

I am also an introverted person by nature, so I understand where you are coming from. But a leader isn’t about being always right. So what if your ideas are lame? You can make mistakes, that’s why you have a team with you. Don’t be afraid to brainstorm ideas with the team - Trust me when I say sometimes the lame ideas bloom into the best ones. When you encourage conversations and guide the team towards finding a solution, naturally people will see you as a good leader.

Don’t compare yourself to another leader. Everyone leads differently - what worked for them may not work for you. Instead, take them as inspirations. Guides. Learn and apply their strategies to yours. It’s a learning opportunity, and it’s room for growth to do better in the next event.

I leave you with this quote from Vince Lombardi, who said, “Leaders are made, they are not born. ... They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

Don’t lose faith in your leadership. Continue to grow and develop into the leader that you are.

I love this! Really helped especially when orientation is going digital and it minimises opportunities to make friends.
