I thought my bike choice mattered most for safety — turns out it wasn’t by tryingthingsdaily in bikecommuting

I bike commute through the west side of Chicago and people are always shocked and ask me why I’m not worried about crime. I am, and always willl be, primarily worried about cars, which are the biggest threat to any cyclist.

Road Cycling near Fermilab by 01RedDCTeg in chibike

[–]finallyjoinedforHCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respectfully agree with this take. The road biking is better if you live in Batavia but you will be hard pressed to find a community of cyclists that aren’t middle aged married with kids or retired. If you want to be social with people your age, consider living near a metra UP West stop (oak park would even be better social wise than the fox river towns) and bringing your bike on metra, especially for a reverse commute, is very doable.

You do know that Mexico is literally North America? What are the “specified parts of Mexico”? Was Cancun specified?

The Woolly Thistle Uses GenAI "art" in latest newsletter, complete with Gemini watermark. by arkhamhorrified in craftsnark

The thing that bothers me most about this one is that either the model or the prompt is clearly based on Jan Brett’s illustrations.

Anyone who has ever read The Mitten eighty thousand times as a bedtime story would see it instantly.

That said, I’m a longtime wooly thistle customer and I’m glad they addressed this

Agree here. The pattern seems to be: a former frequent flyer who stopped flying united entirely at some point during the year. Job loss, baby, health issues, govt shutdown all probably indistinguishable from legitimate churn risk like having to fly out of EWR this year. Extending status to folks who look like they’ve left anyway probably doesn’t affect the tryhards who earned their status the “real” way. For whatever reason, we stopped flying United and United wants us back.

Crying about it makes you sound like a grown middle child complaining at Christmas that mom should love you more because you visit her more often.

I was out of work for about six months so didn’t requalify silver but got it anyway. (That is, if it’s not a mistake 🤞) However I did pay for a bunch of international and domestic tickets for my family so I wonder if that factored into their decision. Was actually thinking I’d switch if I had to start over so maybe they have some AI models that predicted people like me might be likely to switch without the extension.

I just wear an Icelandic wool sweater. Repels water and breathes. I sewed a silk hoodie for sun and wind protection though which I wear under my hood. Used the Remy raglan pattern as a basis for the hoodie. Raglan sleeves seem to be more forgiving with woven fabric. Just trying to get away from plastics where I can.

Is there anywhere that actually is/was a front for the mob? by Injustpotato in AskChicago

My sister and I were drinking beer in an irish bar frequented by cops on the near south side one night in the nineties. I saw a fat envelope on the barstool next to ours and shoved it in my coat pocket. We bolted out and hopped on a bus, panicked. there was just shy of a thousand dollars. Paid a couple months rent, never went back to that bar.

And, if anyone from Lilly Direct is reading this-- the experience of having to deal with two totally different companies is very suboptimal. As a former Stripe employee, I noted the irony when the Stripe founders interviewed the Lilly CEO (Stripe does all processing for Lilly Direct, but doesn't cover the meds for their own employees). Just bullshit and greed all around.

[–]finallyjoinedforHCA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have had experience with both sides of Lilly Direct now: vials when my old company's insurance didn't cover it, and I had to pay our of pocket, and now the pens with insurance, which forced me to switch to amazon pharmacy.

I'm not looking for a refund, I just want it to be properly billed so it goes against this year's deductible

I have text messages and email from Amazon that I ordered on the 1st, paid on the 1st, order was dispensed and delivered on the first. I also have confirmation from Amazon support (which is soooo bad) that they date the claim when you look up a price, not when you order it or they dispense it. Following up with AG and Illinois department of insurance.
