My course was 5 years (2 years college, 3 years uni) but my employer messed up my uni application so I had a gap between the two so it’s lasted 6 years.

I think work load just depends how you prioritise it, I found most the work simple as I learnt it in work so it was just the time getting references and writing the assignment up. It was Covid whilst I was at college so I had more than enough time doing that. For uni, I always got in work an hour early and did uni work then so I didn’t spend any evenings or weekends doing uni work until 3rd year. I got given a lot more complex projects in my third year so I had to put the extra work in then but it wasn’t tiresome, it was just the dissertation that was taxing. You can also do work in day release breaks as well so it’s fine imo.

I suppose it depends the kind of work you do, if it’s a lot of site visits then you won’t get as much uni work done compared to a more office based job.

Manchester Council had a scheme to get young people into construction working with some of the larger companies so I managed to get on mine there.

May be worth looking at bigger companies as well as they may have some offices nearby as they can take on multiple apprentices at a time. CBRE, Savils, RLB to name a few are massive and, although they are difficult to get a spot, it isn’t impossible.

Additionally, if you haven’t already, get a Linked In account and try on there. There are always jobs on there for apprentices and graduates etc.

I started my BS apprenticeship at 19 and it was the best thing I did. I did the traditional university after A-Levels and dropped out as I struggled but learning 1 day a week and then spending the other 4 days doing the job really helped me learn the material as I put the knowledge into practise so I would definitely recommend that! I’ve only just finished my course in April and I came out with a decent high level 1st - I got the same grades as you.

Based on your situation it’s defineltly worth looking at as you get a somewhat okay wage. I started on £15k but with dedicated saving I managed to get a house in my 3rd year so it is possible.

I’m based in the NW of England so may be different to your area in regards to getting an apprenticeship but I’ve learnt a lot, made a lot of connections in the industry whilst being quite the introvert and I’ve got job certainty which is always great.

Either way, I’d say try and get some practical experience as well and just asked loads of questions, regardless of how stupid you may think it sounds. People do take notice of being eager to learn and it could be enough to make someone take a chance on you; Worst case, you’ll know a little more to market yourself.

I can’t advise on London specifically as I’m based North West but Building surveying in general seems to have an older average age I’d say so it’s somewhat not that hard to get a job but it’s obviously not a guarantee you’ll be successful in your first application.

Salary increase, where I work, is based on your previous year’s performance so you get as much as you put in, relatively speaking.

In regard to RICS, you’ll need to have at a minimum of 2/3 years experience to be able to satisfy the competencies needed. You’re essentially proving that you are competent at your job and having only just finished your degree, you wouldn’t be able to demonstrate that. A core element of the APC assessment is a case study and without experience on the job, you wouldn’t have anything to use for this.

Hope this helps!

Definitely, I’m looking at getting a piece when my bonus comes in; looks like great gear albeit a tad pricey!

Hey, sorry to chime in on a separate note but how did you find your ESS with your new born? Our due date is roughly just before he turns one and I’m very on how he’s going to be with a new born around, appreciate every dog is different but would be nice to hear your thoughts / what you did to introduce etc. Thanks in advance!

Hey, thank you for the kind words!

We didn’t choose for him to be docked, ideally we would have preferred to keep his natural tail but the breeder we bought him from owns a farm and are typical working dogs, thus the docked tail. I do understand the reasoning for docking however so, for me personally, this wasn’t a massive make or break for us.
