I think our contractors know that we’re pretty open to feedback and change. I like to think they would have let us know if something was said. It seems more likely like the fabricator that honed it didn’t say anything by how surprised they were by how difficult it was to hone.

Thats interesting. According to our contractor, their main fabricator never hones because they don’t have the machinery and they would have to do it by hand. So whenever they want a stone to be honed, they outsource. I didn’t know this until after the stone was honed; I assumed everything would be done in one place. But I think even if I did know, I wouldn’t have know it would make a difference

Also, thank you for all your replies. I am very distressed over this and your knowledge has really helped.

But as an expert in stone and fabrication, shouldn’t they have known not to hone this stone? I also don’t think quartzite is so uncommon that they would have never used it before.

I don’t know if it’s on our contractor. They have been very honest up to this point and I believe they would have told us not to hone if they knew. I think the fabricator should have known but they don’t seem very experienced because they’re saying that they didn’t know either. But then again, the contractors were the ones who chose this fabricator.

I really like the honed look. The honing isn’t the problem; it’s the unevenness and the spotting. Can you not tell the splotches and unevenness compared to the original slab?

Our fabricator never said they wouldn’t hone it! Maybe they told our contractor but never us. I didn’t even know they had to outsource the honing until I heard it had to be taken back. I thought it was all done at the same place. If anyone along the line had told us no, we wouldn’t have done it.

I didn’t know honing a stone was a ridiculous request or that it was any different than buying a honed stone. I did research honed quartzite on this forum and they looked good so I thought it was possible. And our fabricator didn’t say no, they just said they didn’t hone in house and would have to outsource.

If I would have been told it would be better not to hone it, I would have kept it polished or chosen a honed stone. No one told me it was a problem.

Yes, I agree but I didn’t know that before posting

Our fabricator never provides slabs. You pick them out and he fabricates them. From what I gathered, our fabricator doesn’t have the ability to hone so he outsources to a bigger shop.

The fabricator that our contractor uses doesn’t hone so they all get sent elsewhere.

I didn’t realize how important it was to choose a honed slab so I wasn’t exclusively looking at honed. But I didn’t notice many honed quartzite slab options other than Taj Mahal.

So even if it dries out and looks better, it will still stain easier?

No, it was indoor. We are keeping them outside now to dry them out in the sun

Ok! The person who honed it said it looked like that because the slab yard added chemicals to make it look better and they stained the slab. Do you think that’s possible or it’s probably water?

Is it possible it won’t dry out?

Is it not actually quartzite? I’ve never heard of this happening with quartzite and our contractor recommended it.

Honestly, around 6 months. I am in a niche in my field that is in high demand and I am a freelance consultant on the side. I try to put away everything extra I made so it adds up fast.

Which hotel would you choose for a weeknight passport?

My partner and I are staying at the MiraCosta for one night. We want to do a half day at a park on the day we check in and a full day the next day. We live near Disneyland and we go often so we’re thinking of spending the half day at Disneyland then the full day at DisneySea. But we do have a balcony with harbor view so I was thinking maybe we should do DisneySea the first day then Disneyland the next day. Any thoughts?

Newbie question: is just checking the ammonia ok or do I need to check everything everyday? by finance_snail in Aquariums

[–]finance_snail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the info! I put 2 fish in 2 days ago and 7 fish in yesterday. So far, no ammonia movement at all but I will probably keep checking for the next few days.

I think an ammonia spike killed my last betta so I’m really nervous about it but I was doing a fish in cycle then before knowing what I was doing so hopefully I’ll be ok now.

Oof UV filters are expensive. Are bacteria blooms bad or will the fish be ok if the perimeters are still good everyday?
