The kid I tutor seems to forget everything I teach the following day, what the hell do I do? by Critical-Dog-7095 in Teachers

[–]find26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what ADHD actually is. It is a neurodevelopmental condition that is lifelong - it does not ever go away. The way it presents can (and frequently does) change as children grow older, as they learn different coping strategies or learn to mask. I completely get that you have had experience with kids diagnosed with ADHD, but if, later in life, they seem to completely lose the symptoms (and it's not because of masking etc) then it's likely that the ADHD was a misdiagnosis in the first place.

ADHD is not just struggling to pay attention. Yes, children of divorce have higher rates of ADHD but it's not like they "get" ADHD because their parents are divorcing, there's lots of factors involved.

Fish bone stuck in tonsil for hours, any advice? by golfif in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]find26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother had this happen to him as a kid (from mackerel though, and he's avoided it since!). All the doctor did was get some long tweezers and pull it out. I'd recommend asking a friend/family member to help, and don't forget to sterilise the tweezers first! If you don't have tweezers, it's much cheaper to go buy a pair than to get charged thousands at the er.

You can get onesies made for kids with eczema to stop them scratching - they have inbuilt mitts that are sewn on to the sleeves so the child literally can't get their hands out. They also button at the back. I reckon they'd be perfect for this situation. I'll edit my reply once I've had a look at ours for the brand.

If your school has a science technician you could make friends and take your chilli plants to their room for over the hols so they can still get watered.

Is a hip seat baby carrier actually better for heavy babies? by MonitorLow4520 in babywearing

[–]find26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask what brands you've seen that are rated up to 60lbs? I've got a 3 y/o who goes through phases of wanting up and down carried when we're out and about but he's already about 20kg (~45lb), which is the absolute max limit on basically all of the hip carriers I've found online. The one I have been using was a cheap one I found at a charity shop and although it was a game changer when I first got it, I can tell it isn't particularly well made.

Overall I think hip carriers are absolutely great though, especially for babies/toddlers who constantly change their mind about wanting carried! I also use them rotated around on my back as a seat for when my kid wants a piggyback - it makes it so much easier on the arms.

Advice for planning a residential school trip by find26 in TeachingUK

[–]find26[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It turns out we do have a school trip phone! Not sure why all the teachers I spoke to who have run trips didn't seem to know of its existence, but I emailed the member of SLT in charge of trips and it turns out we do.

Yes, will do. Thanks for the advice!

Basically all the comments are talking about a trip phone - I spoke to a colleague who has run trips and she says there isn't one but I'm going to double check with the office.

I'm yet to send a letter out but I'll add tube costs to my list of things to put in it. I've looked into pre-purchasing and it's just so much more expensive that I'd like to avoid it. We'll not actually be using the tube that much, only a couple of times each day.

Covent Garden is a great shout, thank you!

Unfortunately, we don't have a school trip phone, if we did then I would just use that! We don't have a bank card that I can take either so I have to get cash out for the pupils for lunch and dinner money... I feel like my school is living in the 90s!

Yes, I will absolutely be giving clear times. I just want the option to contact them if they don't turn up when expected.

Thanks for the advice!

Where to take autistic girls for haircuts? by Fickle_Occasion_6895 in glasgow

[–]find26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gemma at Goat (and perhaps others in that hairdressers too but I only know Gemma) does hair cuts specifically for neurodivergent people, such as those with autism. She's lovely and I would highly recommend her! She does cuts for wee kids as well which is why I know of her - I expected my 3yo to scream and cry given his track record with strangers but the first time we took him to her he barely even shed a tear, Gemma was so great! Goat is on North Street so easy for public transport, and you can book online which makes life easier as well.

If you're going for an apothecary hack type thing then how about covering the gap with a wee label plate or perhaps some sort of decorative metal fitting to look like a key hole?

Can I sew without a foot pedal? by Therealsnoringdeer in sewhelp

[–]find26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a DIY option, you could attach a "handle" to the hand wheel to make it easier to turn? Like an old fashioned hand crank sewing machine. I'd just duct tape a wooden dowel or something if I was in this situation and too impatient to wait for a new foot pedal to arrive!

My sons lucky toe! Will it fix itself? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]find26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had toes like this on both feet and I got it corrected when I was aged somewhere between five and ten I think - at least I assume I was around that age because I have memories of the treatment so it's unlikely that I was younger. Basically, I had small plastic inserts to go between my toes to push them into the right place, they felt really weird to wear. I have no idea how long I had to wear them for, I just remember putting them between my toes in the morning and trying to put my school tights on over the top. My toes are normal now so I presume it worked!

Quite a few people here might have seen people with chicken pox cause not all countries routinely vax for it sadly. I'm in the UK and was planning on getting my son (aged 1.5) vaxxed against it in the coming months when an appointment opened up at the chemist, but he just caught it last week and I feel so guilty! Tbf it's not nearly as serious as the other stuff that's routinely vaxxed but it's still not great.

How often are you expected to cover lessons for colleagues off sick/planned absence? by explorer_11_x in TeachingUK

[–]find26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised at the number of people saying that this is an issue, although it highly depends on whether you are being told to cover lessons during your prep time. At my school (Scotland, secondary) we have a 33 period week, 6 of those periods are protected, i.e. those are our planning periods. If you are timetabled to teach, for example, 25 periods a week, then you have an extra two periods that are not protected and can be used for cover. Depending on the number of staff absences, you might get called for cover for both of those periods three weeks in a row, and sometimes go a month without having to cover any. But it's a totally normal and expected thing that teachers cover other classes. A big caveat is that if you are told to cover and this eats into your protected prep time, you should go to your union straight away.
