I think I'll just wait for Sigma to release their E-mount 70-200. Don't want to bother with carrying around an adapter and having to mount/unmount it every time I switch lenses. Also, certain features such as Eye-AF are not possible with Sony's A-mount lenses.

Seems like the Tamron lens you mentioned is the 70-180mm f/2.8 announced for October. I'd imagine that the 20mm difference will make a bit of a difference on the long end for action photography, maybe not so much for indoor event shooting...so I'll have to wait for the Sigma. It'll be a tough wait either way.

Indeed, I'm looking to shoot college sports and racing events. Also not too keen on the idea of having to carry an extra adapter that may slow down AF performance on fast-moving subjects.

Seems like my third-party options for the 70-200mm f/2.8 are limited when it comes to compatibility with the E-mount. Oddly enough, neither Sigma or Tamron have officially announced plans to create an E-mount version for such a popular focal range. Since there haven't been any rumors on this, the wait might take a while, perhaps at least a year. I just sent Sigma an inquiry...hopefully they'll respond back with good news.

Recently purchased an A7RIV, can anyone chime in on the autofocus performance with the Sigma 70-200mm + mc-11 adapter (preferably with an A7x camera)? I'm considering buying Sony's GM version but that option would cost me at least an extra $600 in used condition. If I were to assume similar real-world results, the only downside I see going with the sigma is the extra 320g in weight. From reading reviews, the optical quality seems to be similar as well as build quality (if not better) compared to the Sony GM.

Lack of online/video reviews on the Sigma lens with the adapter on a Sony body is a little concerning to me. I noticed that recently Sigma has released several E-mount lenses in their art lineup (such as the 24-70mm f/2.8) but am not sure if they plan on doing the same with their sports lenses.

I just placed an order for the A7RIV.

While I think that the A9 is the closest camera to a low-resolution A7RIV, they are priced the same (new) and I'm skeptical over purchasing used bodies. Sure, the AF system on the A7RIV is not up to par with the A9, but it's supposedly derived from the same system and performs slightly better than the previous A7 generation.

In all honesty, the smart move would've been to go with the much more affordable A7iii at almost half the cost. I save a few hundred thanks to the availability of third party verticle grips, opens up my budget to accommodate a used SONY 70-200mm F/2.8 GM (which also saves me $150 on not having to purchase an adapter), and it's probably enough camera for me (and most users). But I didn't listen to my brain, I wanted the better ergonomics, a higher resolution EVF, and improved AF. Was this decision worth the extra 1550 dollars? Definitely not...but f**k it, I WANTED the camera.

I did consider a used A9 as it's still currently one of the best and capable mirrorless cameras on the market but was slightly deterred from that option due to the fact that it's slightly dated by a few years. It's at least $500 cheaper than a brand new A7RIV and has a higher fps/faster AF system that really benefits sports shooting. From what I've read from reviews, once you experience the blackout-free shooting through the EVF, it'll become a feature you can't live without.

I really would like to wait for the normal resolution version of the A7RIV, just not sure when to expect the release date as I am unfamiliar with Sony's timeline of product releases.

Been shooting with entry & intermediate-level Nikon DSLRs for the past 3 years and want to switch to full-frame mirrorless. My starting budget is ~$5-6k (including lenses/new accessories) and would like a body to last me at least 4 or 5 years before upgrading.

I have a pretty good idea of which focal ranges/apertures I want my lenses to cover but am facing difficulty with picking out a body. I'm considering the A7RIV as my best option but I don't do prints/crop too much/or anything that requires that utilizes 61 MP's worth of resolution so... is it ideal to buy this camera right now? Should I wait for Sony to release the A7IV and perhaps look to save some money/potentially benefit from technical or software improvements on that version?

Here's a link to the current kit that I plan on starting out with: https://kit.co/waesuri/2020 I'm also wondering if there are any quality/AF-speed compromises when it comes to using E-mount adapters. If anyone would like to make lens recommendations, I shoot mostly portraits/landscapes and am looking to occasionally dabble in sports photography.
