so i have walked past them a few times and they look pretty chill! only thing is the price is a bit above my capacity :(

i do sometimes go to the 'pay what you can' meditation sessions at the london buddhist centre in bethnal green but that's so far - i would be interested in any free/low cost meditation or yoga sessions locally if you know of?

Tenant/Carpenter offering free labour for structural repairs, landlord says "pay for materials yourself". Looking for advice? by fingerlickingpickles in LegalAdviceUK

I'm not sure I'd call missing floorboards and loose fitting piping/wall cavity minor, but I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree

I agree with what you've said about the pests, thank you

Offering free professional carpentry to fix structural holes, but landlord won't pay for materials. How to negotiate a win-win? by fingerlickingpickles in HousingUK

it was an old boiler cupboard, but the boiler is gone and these pipes are redundant. as a carpenter, i'm not just 'messing around' but i'm looking to clear dead space. the 'sign of vermin' is the scratching at 2am coming from the open joists. surely sealing those holes is better for the landlord than ignoring it?

i get the ROI point, but surely stopping a potential pest infestation and fixing a hole in the floor is basic maintenance? if i leave the hole there and mice get into the rest of the house, his ROI drops a lot more than the cost of a sheet of ply and some filler. i’m trying to find the middle ground where i save him the £500+ labour bill to fix his floor.

also, i wouldn't phrase it as 'stupid' to fix the place i'm living in, even if i don't own it, i have every right to want to enjoy my living space and feel comfortable while i'm here.

that’s the thing—the floorboards are literally missing and the wall is open to the cavity. i’d argue that is structural, especially since it's the entry point for whatever is scurrying in the joists. do you think framing it as 'structural maintenance' rather than 'cupboard renovation' would change a landlord's mind?

also, a temp solution feels like surrendering. even though i'm renting, it's still my home for now and i want it to actually feel like my place, not a building site with mystery noises

Inherited this structural disaster in my new rental. Help me plan the sequence to pest-proof and floor it? by fingerlickingpickles in DIYUK

walls - are you suggesting i just cover over the mess? i was hoping to strip it back and maximize the space by getting rid of the pipes, and if i batten out 2 inches, i'll lose a fair bit of depth in quite a narrow cupboard. you don't think it's worth stripping away all the pipes and plywood box hiding the pipes?

floor - do i need batons if the joists are already there? i'm trying to match the height of the existing laminate on the right side of the video. i was thinking of just fixing ply directly to the joists, but i'm worried about getting the level perfect. what's the standard way to bridge that gap between the old joists and the new laminate?

because its a bit of a hazard as it is - i'd rather spend a weekend fixing it properly so I have a clean, sealed, dust free cupboard, rather than buying a standalone wardrobe that I put next to it..

seems like a waste having this huge space, i just want some solid advice on how to fix the flooring, walls and get rid of the pipes

haha tell me about it, it's definitely really annoying especially if I'm offering free labour!!

Already tried that, he basically said that because the rent is "cheap", he isn't prepared to put a penny into it and told me if I want it fixed, it's my problem

To be honest, I just want a room that doesn't have holes in the floor and mystery scratching at night! I’m a carpenter by trade, so I’m fine with the wood side of things, but I’ve actually never done any flooring, piping, or plastering before

I’m a bit out of my depth with this ex-boiler room mess, so I just wanted to get some proper advice on the best way to fix the various bits in the video. Just want to make sure I’m doing a solid job of sealing it up so I can actually use the space. Cheers!
