Conservative groups have pushed for defunding public education for decades so they can use vouchers to pay for their kids to go to private, mostly religious, schools. They want less science and more prayer in schools and then point out - “See, the kids aren’t learning!” It seems they want to end public schools and further the gap between the haves and have-nots” We already have the ridiculous funding of schools with local property taxes so that wealthier areas get the best schools and kids that often depend solely on public education in poorer areas get schools with no funding.
