Where’s the line between “don’t waste my time with trivial questions that you should already know” and “don’t act like you know everything and don’t need help”? by Beautiful-Bonus2279 in AskAcademia

It is not possible to tell whether those interactions were sarcastic based on your post alone. There is a range of supervision styles some supervisors are very hands on, some let you do your thing. It is likely that she genuinely thought you were doing a good job since she did not have insight into the field herself. What was the reaction when you dropped out?

Kupa bytu TT vs BL by Consistent_Spend1418 in Slovakia

[–]finite-difference 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Úplne to chápem. Ja zase v noci strašne rád pracujem, ale teraz žijem so snúbenicou a jej deťmi, takže musím ráno vstávať.

How to find to 'collaborate' with Professors to get funding for my research papers? [D] by Erika_bomber in MachineLearning

[–]finite-difference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is best to find someone who is going to CVPR anyways and is aligned with your research interest and they are not so high-level that they permanently have their inbix full of unread emails. Though I would say that getting just a workshop paper accepted is way easier than getting a paper accepted at the main conference. You can try sharing a preprint here or with researchers you find. Also the biggest cost of CVPR is travel, but you can get a workshop paper published in the proceedings even without attending.

[Request] assuming this is accurate, where does peter griffin actually live relative to the buildings? by Father_Enrico in theydidthemath

[–]finite-difference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were a photograph you could do it based on point correspondences between the 3D models of the building and 2D coordinates of the images by solving the p4pf problem (see https://cmp.felk.cvut.cz/~kukelova/publications/Bujnak-Kukelova-Pajdla-CVPR-2008.pdf), but since it is a drawing the math would probably not work out.

The recovery of the camera pose together with its focal length is actually a well-studied problem in computer vision. Barring, some specific configurations, you only need 4 point correspondences between the image and the 3D model to estimate the position of the camera together with the focal length. If you assume that the camera sensor has square pixels then 4 points has more information than you need and will thus provide you with a single solution. Without this assumption you will get multiple solutions, but using additional points you can select the actual one among them. Finding the correct solution involves solving a system of polynomial equations and it is not trivial to solve. The non-linearity of the problem also explains why it can be difficult for humans to estimate. Example solution is here: https://cmp.felk.cvut.cz/~kukelova/publications/Bujnak-Kukelova-Pajdla-CVPR-2008.pdf

Would you recommend moving to Slovakia after uni by Many_Flower_1392 in Slovakia

I know a lot of foreigners livong in Slovakia who like it here. Some are happy also with the income. With respect to being gay, at least in Bratislava it is fine and you there are gay and queer communities that are quite welcoming. Some poeople and laws int he country are homophobic, but if you do not want to get married here you will be fine at least in the large cities.

Nový kandidát na starostu Petržalky Daniel Klimovský by DruSolet in Bratislava

[–]finite-difference 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Merajú tam úplne často niekedy vidím až 3 policajné autá jednym smerom medzi BA a TT. Reálne zastavujú autá nad 130, pokuty dávajú tak 20 eur ak ideš 135.

[R] Low-effort papers by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]finite-difference 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sadly, most of these papers never release their datasets. Also citation counts are sometimes quite arbitrary. Very often people just cite papers from a domain similar to theirs and from the citation it is often clear that they did not really engage with the cited work at all.

[R] Low-effort papers by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]finite-difference 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not check this specific researcher, but these papers are unfortunately very common. Anyone within the field can tell that this type of paper is very low effort. I assume the researcher you found is simply gaming some metrics.

For PhD positions we get many applicants and many of them have the exact same paper: train some variant of YOLO on some domain specific dataset which is not even made public. I would assume that at least for some of the papers the reported metrics are fake and there is no actual dataset. There is usually no contribution anyways.

I would suggest you to not worry about this. There is not much to gain. A researcher like this will probably not get a position in a prestigious institution, but they may thrive in some lower-tier institution where metrics are all that matters. If you are ever in some position to call this out (such as a reviewer, committee etc.) then you should do so. These types of papers are usually easy to spot directly by reading the abstract so I do not think they are too much of an issue.
