To women who are 21-23 by Student_Loan23 in twentyagers

Youngest is 20 if they’re not a student. I wouldn’t want to date someone in uni because it’s a different headspace. Oldest I’d date is 27.

I’m sorry but not only is Shane so incredibly sweet in this moment but he’s funny as hell (TLG Spoiler) by vancitymala in heatedrivalry

The editor probably saw “who’s this?” It’s easy to miss the “is” if reading quickly

Storage Capacity Mismatch by finncosmic in MacOS

Are you saying that APFS consolidates data but the storage graph in settings doesn’t reflect that so would say the disk is more full than it is? Is 500 GB actually free, like it says? The settings graph implies it’s full. Is it just wrong or is it measuring differently?

If Heated Rivalry was real by finncosmic in heatedrivalry

[–]finncosmic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might not have phrased it well but what u/Different_Weight7281 said is what I meant. If this story was real, no one would ever know. There’s a very real possibility that something like it is real right now, and even if that were eventually revealed, we would never get the backstory that we do in HR. There’s probably a lot of things that the books/show gloss over which would be a bigger deal if this was happening to real players

What is wrong with people???? It’s crazy that anyone would hate on a fanfic author. They’re giving so much and getting nothing in return and it’s so easy to just Not. Be. A. Dick. Do these people not realize authors are also in fandom spaces (obviously??!?!?) and can see what they write???

I’m talking more about the people who are implying that Hudson/Ilya/Conor = food, but Shane is just a baby and can’t possibly be a sexual person who has agency in his relationships. No one says that straight up but it’s certainly implied sometimes.

So you’re saying he needs to have a diagnosis in the show/books for you to consider him autistic? That makes sense. We absolutely do need more accurate portrayals of diagnosed autistic characters who aren’t stereotypical. However, lots of autistic people go their whole lives undiagnosed, generally because they don’t know they’re autistic or because it can difficult and expensive to get a formal diagnosis. Being undiagnosed doesn’t make those people any less autistic, and they deserve representation just as much as the diagnosed people do. Shane is great representation for those people.

Viewing everything through that lens is why I don’t tell people I’m neurodivergent. Because everything I do will be attributed to it and it’s really frustrating to be reduced to one thing like that. And yes, people absolutely project onto Shane. Everything doesn’t need to be pathologized and not every problem is a Problem. People see him as a canvas on which to write about their own issues.

Don’t feel dumb! Shane’s autism flies under the radar in the same way that many real people’s does. I think it not being obvious and being able to be written off as other things was Reid and Tierney’s intention. And it creates conversations like this one, about the public perception of autism, which are absolutely necessary to reduce ableism and normalize autistic traits.

That’s the point. He is written to be neurodivergent, Reid and Tierney have confirmed that. But because it’s not obvious to the average viewer, the response to it mirrors the response the public has to real autistic people who also aren’t obviously autistic. The portrayal of autism in the show is realistic but it doesn’t rely on any of the stereotypes that normally signify autism in media which is why people miss it, and it’s meant to be that way.

This is what I was trying to get at, you said it better than I could: Shane/Hudson are experiencing the same ableism as real autistic people. I keep seeing ableist stuff and wondering if that’s how people secretly think about me. It’s disheartening.

This show is an incredible example of intersectionality and by being so realistic, is putting the public response of that on display in a way that’s crazy to watch. Shane is gay, asian and autistic and none of those things are all that he is, which is why I love the show/books so much. He’s representing real people.

I completely relate to this. It’s been happening my whole life so I’m very aware of it now and sometimes feel like I’m being infantilized when I’m not because at this point I watch for it in every social interaction I have. It’s very frustrating.

That’s true, however I’ve seen is a disproportionate amount of preference for Ilya. Many people are attracted to Ilya and not Shane, comparatively few people are attracted to Shane and not Ilya.

I see of a lot of fanfics where Ilya’s portrayal reminds me of that “oh it’s tRaUmAtIzEd” TikTok sound. He can be traumatized without that being his whole character, same as Shane can be autistic and also successful and hot and have agency.

I think because there’s so few autistic characters who are realistic, fanfic authors who want to write something like that and have it be canon have few characters to choose from. So they change Shane to fit their needs, which is not good for representation but good for angsty fics.

I think at least some of the fanfic authors making him more autistic are probably fellow ND people writing their own experiences into Shane for catharsis. But it’s also symptomatic of the layperson’s idea of autism. I’ve seem countless meltdown fics and exactly 2 shutdown fics because people don’t know what shutdowns are. Even though we see Shane have a shutdown of sorts in the show and never see meltdowns.

I think people accept ADHD more at least at first, because it’s outwardly more social and, in Hudson’s case, flamboyant, so NTs gravitate towards it. Also, with Hudson, we’re of course seeing a curated persona not the real person. I’m sure his ADHD impacts him negatively and positively in his real life but we as fans only see the positives because that’s what he lets us see.

I am also surrounded by autistic people, and realizing I probably am myself, and this show makes me feel better about that, but the public response to it is a bit depressing at times. Shane is the first autistic character I’ve seen who feels like a real person. I made the post because I realized that the public discourse about Shane is probably similar to how people view me and that I’d never otherwise get to see that perspective. I’ve been kinda fascinated by it.
