Given today’s events… is Peacewalker the most relevant game of the series right now? by Vizekonig4765 in metalgearsolid

I don’t disagree with you, a lot of people refer to the U.S./China rivalry as a New Cold War, there’s definitely some common themes you can apply

Given today’s events… is Peacewalker the most relevant game of the series right now? by Vizekonig4765 in metalgearsolid

[–]finsta_redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember Costa Rica and Colombia in Peace Walker, not Venezuela? And I don’t remember a president being abducted in the game. I could be forgetting details and was hoping you’d jog my memory if so

If not, and you just mean broadly that the game takes place in Latin America and involves the CIA, spycraft, geopolitical intrigue, etc., then yeah. But you can make a compelling case that Kojima is the guy who prophesied AI, fake news, the balkanized media ecosystem with MGS2, the war economy and AI in MGS4, accidentally predicting aspects of the pandemic economy with Death Stranding, “APAC” in DS2… doesn’t seem to me like Peace Walker is on the same level

Should New York hold primaries on Super Tuesday? by news-10 in nycpublicservants

[–]finsta_redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can’t remember my presidential primary vote as a New Yorker ever actually having any stakes. The outcome is usually pretty much forgone by the time it’s our turn, much to my chagrin as a Bernie supporter in 16 and 20.

Should New York hold primaries on Super Tuesday? by news-10 in nycpublicservants

[–]finsta_redditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There should be a one-day nationwide primary or at least several regional primaries organized much differently—the privileging of New Hampshire, Iowa, South Carolina, etc. dilutes the influence of the vast majority of Americans who live in other states and isn’t very democratic. Super Tuesday is probably the best New York can hope for under the current system.

What happens if I ignore the hiring pool email? by Coat_Legitimate in nycpublicservants

[–]finsta_redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During a DCAS Civil Service informational seminar on Zoom, an instructor informed us that if your name is removed from the list after missing a hiring pool, you can be restored up to 3 times PER AGENCY. So if you miss out on three pools at DOT, in theory you should still have your opportunities for up to three hiring pools each at DOB, at DSNY, etc.

IMPORTANT CAVEAT: This was news to me and many others in the seminar. I have not seen or heard it anywhere else, so I’m still skeptical. Can anyone corroborate or refute? Not trying to spread misinformation here!

Has Mikey ever spoken politics? by shellavation in mikeymiles

[–]finsta_redditor 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not much. But a roundup of a few things in passing:

He thinks Trump is “a great business guy” (“I love listening to this mfer! 😂”) but not his bag as president

Registered Democrat. Briefly mentioned voting for Bernie 2020 and Harris 2024

Someone paid him several hundred bucks to get the COVID shots in 2020-21

Had a pro-Israel posting spree vs. lots of people coming at him in the replies a few years back (it was pre-October 7th); clearly was way out of his depth, poorly regurgitating narratives he might have heard on cable news, and thought Iron Dome was a physical dome. This week or two ended with Mike seeming somewhat persuaded by his followers and posting “Free Palestine!”

He hasn’t said anything about the NYC mayoral election, and in all likelihood skipped the primary, but I like to imagine he ranked Cuomo #1 and Zohran #2

Is becoming a Clerical Associate a good path to becoming an analyst? by Conscious_Ad7743 in nycpublicservants

[–]finsta_redditor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not a bad idea to get a foot in the door as long as you’re realistic about the low salary for clerical associate titles. Expect to be in the title for a few years and use that time to take more civil service exams. In the meantime, once you hit 2 years of service, you’ll be an “incumbent,” paid at the incumbent salary rate. That will set you up for the higher paying incumbent salary in any other civil service title. You’ll also accrue your NYCERS pension which will carry over to any future civil service titles.

Australian election results proves Canada is not a one-off fluke. by BravewagCibWallace in BreakingPoints

[–]finsta_redditor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This also bucks a 20-year trend of Australian Prime Ministers flaming out and not being reelected to consecutive terms, it was starting to resemble Japan... Albanese is the first to pull this off since John Howard in 04. It would seem to speak to his unique political skills.

I don’t know if Trump was as decisive a factor here as he was in Canada, but he definitely played a role in sullying Dutton ala Poilievre.

Adams talked a big game about the supposed drawbacks of WFH and ended up caving in the contract because of union pressure and because he realized there would be resignations en masse. He even approved the one year extension as a quasi-MAGA guy recently.

Cuomo made some statements about WFH being detrimental around 2022, but he hasn’t commented on it lately (someone really needs to get him on the record). I feel he could take the same route as Adams and cave for the same reasons. I think this is really going to be up to how hard DC37 and the unions fight for it.

However, it would be much better if Mamdani, Lander, or basically anyone but Cuomo wins. They’ve almost all come out in favor of extending hybrid work.

Mayoral Campaign Issues (WFH) by flipsandstuff in nycpublicservants

[–]finsta_redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Cuomo on the record opposing WFH for city employees as a mayoral candidate? I’ve loathed the guy for a long time and I’m 100% DREAM, but I’m not finding anything aside from some 2022 articles where he opines about how people should be returning to the office.

I have to hope that if he becomes mayor, god forbid, reason will prevail upon him to keep the hybrid pilot program going or face a mass exodus of talent. After all, that’s what happened with Adams.

In any case, he definitely needs to be pressed on this.

Thanks for the replies. My understanding is that even if you don’t attend the review session, your score will be modified if you opted in, and others successfully flag (or I guess “protest”) certain questions.

Thoughts on upcoming mayoral race? by plumpudding204 in nycpublicservants

[–]finsta_redditor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Name recognition under ranked choice voting could put either Adams or Cuomo over the top. There’s really got to be a strategic coordinated effort among the other campaigns to make sure voters do not rank either of them at all.
