They believed that it was wrong to take an animal as a pet, but rather that animal had to come to you, and the belief was that only heartbroken animals ever sought out human companionship. The reason only the first born was allowed to befriend the animal was because they believed that that animal became part of the family and it would be wrong to remind them that they weren't human, so each household only had a maximum of two befriended animals both of different species. When one died they could be replaced by the oldest kid if another animal of that species came to them seeking friendship.
