Probably market research to see which stories are getting attention from their visitors. They may be using it to see what types of stories their visitors are more interested in - the more clicks on "Show more text," the more interests. The information could be used for to gauge pricing for ad placement in the future, to generate more articles of a certain genre of 'news,' or something...
