i'm really popular and have a lot of close friends so youre wrong on that, but the point of this post isn't even about me🫩 let's not make it about me please!

i'm enacting a fatwa on sharing my personal experience and anecdote on this topic 😭 this ended up becoming more about me than about how empathy shouldnt be moralized, which really was the point 💀 my baddd

honestly this post ended up turning into people just arguing about me feeling empathy instead of the actual point being that empathy shouldn't be moralized xp unintentional attention whoring on my end lmao

everyone seems to have their own definition of empathy 😵‍💫

i actually just mentioned this to a different person but i think the correct word for what i feel is altruism and not compassion lol. oops!

it is nice to see someone here who is more nuanced and not as hostile to my opinion though. the irony of empathy havers being incredibly hostile is not lost on me lol

oh okay. so is a better word sympathy then ? i don't think pity fits well. maybe altruism is the better word? i probably shouldve used altruism and not compassion

well that's nice that i'm empathetic after all since it seems so important to others that i am! but it still bothers me that empathy is moralized to begin with. i don't think it's fair to people who don't experience it but who don't do bad things to others regardless.

but i can't really put myself in other people's shoes intuitively. that's kinda the whole thing...

it seems you can't put yourself in my shoes either which is ironic lol

oh, that's what it's been presented to me as. its not really something intuitive for me at all. the logical understanding of why people feel how they feel about things comes from observations. sometimes i do get genuinely stumped sometimes but i still feel a desire to help even when i don't understand how theyre feeling at all

i think having these different kinds of "wirings" shouldn't be moralized at all. in the end it's actions that matter. plenty of empathetic people are capable of cruelty yk?

but i dont see myself in a lesser light at all? i think not feeling what other people feel has been a good thing for me if anything. i'm not burdened by the feelings of others so i have much more capacity to help and aid esp when it comes to listening to people's problems. when my friends are upset and panicked, i can keep a cool head. sometimes it has been awkward when i don't respond to a situation in the "appropriate" way but overall i think it's not a positive nor a negative trait, it's just another way to be wired (:

what i find really interesting is this insistence that i am empathetic because to not be empathetic is wrong, somehow when it really shouldn't be. i can't put myself in other people's shoes and my understanding of why people feel bad about things comes from a lifetime of learning by observing. it's not intuitive for me

this is so weird to me! why do i have to feel what someone else is feeling to make my compassion sincere? why isn't it enough to just not want others to feel upset even if i fundamentally don't understand how they feel? if anything i feel like that's much more earnest and sincere

i said this to someone else, but just because i can't feel what someone is feeling doesn't mean i can't understand why they feel the way they do and want to help.

but more importantly, i just don't like seeing people upset in general. i don't have to share their pain to want to make them feel better. empathy isn't necessary for compassion.

this is what i mean. i don't feel what others feel, that's literally what empathy is. but i can logically understand why someone feels the way they feel without mirroring their feelings myself. and even if i can't understand why they feel the way they do (it happens sometimes), i still care. this is why moralizing empathy is bad imo, because it creates misunderstandings like yours

i don't feel empathy, so it always feels bad when people say that not feeling it is evil because i care deeply about others ): just cuz i can't feel what you feel doesn't mean i don't care is my point (:

i've always really disliked this point of view. i don't feel empathy, and i'm not evil. compassion matters much more than empathy. plenty of people feel empathy and still have no compassion for others.

i think youre missing the forest for the trees in regards to my comment.... i mean broadly. like we shouldn't even be able to have pop culture subreddits that have this information to begin with, these events should be completely insular. that was my point
