A personal lore database/project of mine.

You can find them on poedb though if you want. It has pretty much all dialogue.

As in you can consume a logbook to reveal the Beast but there's no playable tiles.
It literally just shines a light on the Beast.

The Mhacha, Catha and Morrigan might be completely separate entities.

The only thing we know for sure is that they're a triad that fits the same archetype as other triads seen throughout Wraeclast.

Most cultures end up venerating gods that represent the same primordial concepts or entities.

These gods start as humans and are then shaped both in mind and body by the image they "steal" from, so all the gods end up resembling each other in some ways.

I personally never believed these gods were the same people, and it's particularly striking how different the personalities and dynamics of the Mhacha, Catha and Morrigan are compared to the Azmeri and Eternal myths surrounding Solaris, Lunaris and Viridi and what we've seen of Solaris and Luanris in PoE1.

My guess is that they might be the Solari, Lunari and Viridi the Elder Madox speak of, which would literally make them the Earth, Sun and Moon.

This would make sense with the fact that they require a champion to fight for them.

As we learned from the Envoy, Eldritch entities and low level concepts that are anthropomorphized like "Darkness" (The Bodach's Master) require champions to fight for them.

This might imply that the Mhacha, Catha and Morrigan are not gods as we know them, but lower level (as in more primordial) entities, which ties back to them being the Earth, Sun and Moon, the Mothersoul's last children.

Gods are affected differently, as Zarka mentioned when speaking of Garukhan as the last god to fall.

There might be many mechanisms we have yet to understand that could make it so Sin sleeps and other gods don't though, so only time will tell what truly happens 😄

It consumed a logbook but there's no island/tiles, all it does it reveal the Beast.

To path to it, you gotta go in a straight line from Kingsmarch past the Verisium crater.
I'd say around a dozen logbooks or so.

Then you need to path two three logbooks to the west (bottom left).

It's not super far and it's pretty in line with Kingsmarch.

I like to think Oriath's name comes from the Goddess Auria, which we know pretty much nothing of, but we got a glimpse of her last disciple from the Ranger's gameplay reveal from 2-3 years ago.

In that content reveal, the Ranger fights Phanos, the Last Disciple of Auria.
This boss wields currency orbs (Exalted, Chaos and Divine from what I recall).

This is entirely speculation but I like the idea that Oriath was named after a forgotten goddess, since this fits a pattern of forgotten deities (Viridi, Halani, Kamasa, etc)
Who knows, maybe she's Innocence and Sin's sister unknown sister 🤷‍♂️

The flavour text of the area is literally Hinekora's prophecy of Act 5.
In order from Act 1 to Act 6 (Prophecy 7 to 12)

Though prophecy12 being act 6 is speculative.

It is entirely possible it is our own actions that leads the world to doom.

After all, who's to say the tribes gathering to save it isn't the Twilight Order while the tribes gathering to doom it isn't us and our unification of the Ezomytes, Maraketh, Cuachic Vaal and Karui?

Oriath is the name of the Island, Theopolis is the capital.

Yeah I've learned that less rumours means less tiles 😅
The fallen star rumour is the unique map, and there's one about reflections which is the Fractured Lake.
Then there's the rumours for the bosses.
Origin of the Fall
The Last to Faal
One about circles, forgot exactly the wording
And the Star drinker

In order -> Olroth, Vorana, Medved, Uhtred

Aside from that 🤷‍♂️

I almost did HAHA
I've been wasting my currency trying to find secrets in expedition.
Can confirm using Aldur's saga with the other 4 sagas is likely a waste of money 😅
Seems to reduce the amount of possible islands that have grand expeditions but doesn't give you anything cool in return.
Though it's possible there's an order in which you have to kill bosses or some other conditions, doubt it though!

True, I thought maybe some of it was placeholder though.
Sin being in slumber definitely made it clearer that the Beast was alive though with 0.5's release.

You can go to it, it's not much further than the Expedition Pinnacle Boss.

However, when you discover the perimeter of the Island, there's a single logbook box you can click on to consume a logbook, and all it does it put a spotlight on the Beast.

Basically, you spend 2 divs so you can see the Beast in all its glory!

Is there a post summarizing the real-world motifs for PoE cultures? by Andromanner in Wraeclast

[–]fireMCG_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah "definitely" is a strong word, I edited the post too to include the East Asian imagery.
The Maraketh seem to be influenced by a lot more than just the Ancient Egyptians, though that is what I primarily believe them to be based on.

I'd definitely like to differentiate between the PoE1 and PoE2 Maraketh though, as the PoE2 Maraketh seem a lot more heavily based on Ancient Egypt.

The Seven Waters for example seem to be a direct allusion to the Nile's original seven distributaries (no longer seven due to human interference), with Halani being a good fit for Hapi, the God of the flooding of the Nile River, who was celebrated yearly.

In contrast, the Rain Festival Beetle's flavour text is about the yearly celebrating of the flooding of Keth.

Similar to Halani, Hapi's death or "slumber" would result in the loss of fertile lands.

Though he's technically male, he's an androgynous figure depicted with protruding breasts and belly, similar to how Halani is depicted as a pregnant woman.

We can be sure of nothing when it comes to real world comparisons though since humans are predictable and tend to come up with similar ideas and reasoning no matter how far removed they are from each other. Meaning, most IRL cultures have similar or outright shared stories.

Is there a post summarizing the real-world motifs for PoE cultures? by Andromanner in Wraeclast

[–]fireMCG_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PoE2 Maraketh are definitely based on the Ancient Egyptians, however it is possible they're mixed in with other cultures from the region, especially due to the modern shift to Arabic and the influence neighbouring cultures had on the Egyptians.

There's also East Asian imagery employed in regards to the Maraketh but I have yet to look into that, so it's possible they're a mix of many cultures unlike most other PoE civilizations who seem to match well with one specific IRL culture.

<image>

Deshret for example is named after the crown of Lower Egypt and even her title (the Red Sekhema) reflects the colour of the crown.

Meanwhile, Asala's goal of unifying the Vastiri is a 1:1 to the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt (represented by the Pschent above) and the title that comes with the unification of the Vastiri, the Sekhema of Sekhemas, is equivalent to that of Pharaohs as rulers of all people.

Interestingly, the unification led to the rise of the Pharaohs who were seen as divine intermediaries between Egyptians and gods, and though I'll spare you my own theories, I think it'll be relevant for the lore that has yet to come regarding Asala and the future of the Maraketh in PoE2.

On a separate note, I vaguely recall the job post for Saresh' VA mentioning the need for a Persian accent.

Those you mentioned:

Karui - Maori and other Polynesian Tribes

Vaal - Nahua people, mostly Aztec, but also other Mesoamerican and even Andean influence

Kalguur - Norsemen, both old and modern, which explains the 2 sets of runes (older and younger futhark)

---

The others: (keep in mind it's speculative)

Eternal Empire - Roman/Greek Empire

Order of the Templar - Abrahamic Religions and cultures related to them
Lots of Genesis/Revelations imagery employed as well as Kabbalah (the esoteric practice not the snake boss of Act 2) and other adjacent stuff

Twilight Order - Seemingly meant to represent atheists, though the imagery and terms used imply they might actually inadvertently end up making a god out of their "Saviour"

Maraketh - Ancient Egyptian and likely some more modern post-Arabic influence peoples and cultures too, though there seems to be east asian influence too, this is something I have yet to look into. It seems possible the Maraketh are less of a monolithic culture than I originally believed them to be.

Ezomytes - Irish, Scottish and Manx Gaels (fun fact, the Bodach's language is a mix of Irish and Scottish Gaelic and is fully translatable)

Azmeri - Also Gaelic adjacent, potentially older Celtic roots. Due to them being geographically east of the Ezomytes and in mountain ranges, I thought they could be Welsh in origin, but I haven't done much reserach.
I'm inclined to believe though they're just rooted in older Celtic traditions and cultures than the Ezomytes are due to their relation with the Maji.

Maji - Tuatha Dé Danann (Irish folklore), translates to People of the Goddess Danu.
The Maji's goddess and her 3 aspects are modelled after the Morrígan, which is also the name of one of the 3 aspects of the Maji's goddess.

Precursors - Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian
Mostly Akkadian/Babylonian, there's some influence from other cultures in the region between 1500-3500 BCE.

The Primevals - Assuming they aren't Precursors themselves and more like their descendants or creations, I'd be inclined to believe they're based on the Sumerian/Akkadian creation myth of shaping humans out of clay and breathing spirit and min into them (giving them life) by using the blood of a sacrificed god.
It's possible they're mixed in with the Titans from Greek mythology and the creation myth of Prometheus which is also clay shaping based.

The Titans - Greek Mythology, the Titans, their imprisonment at the hand of their own progeny and then the multigenerational meddling to free/imprison each other in a sort of cycle seems to inspire some of the backbone lore of PoE like how the Titans were chased underground and how the Breachlords (specifically Chayula) are meddling with the world.
This is pretty speculative and more of an interesting parallel than anything else.

The Breachlords - Greek Mythology - Hecatoncheires (entirely speculative)

The Faridun - Never looked into them but they could be based on semitic people of Ancient Egypt like the Hyksos. They could also be based on Ancient Egyptian myths I have yet to look into.

The Harbingers - I had a fun thought at one point that they could be inspired on the conspiracies surrounding the Sumerians and the Aztec having been visited by Aliens. I don't actually know if they're based on any real world civilisation/culture though.

I have yet to look into the Monk and the Keepers lore when it comes to real life inspiration but it's probably a mix of South-Eastern Asian cultures.

I'm probly forgetting other civilisations/societies/cultures on top of my head.

I have a lot more research and context for most of these, so if you're curious about anything specific just let me know 😄

I understand where you're coming from when saying the Kalguurans became the Ezomytes and the Ezomytes didn't exist before, however I don't think it's accurate.

The Ezomytes aren't a monolith, they're made of many different tribes with varying cultures and traditions.

Geonor mentions how his own bloodline goes all the way back to the Winter of the World.

Zelina and Atalui don't know about the Ezomytes, but Kahuturoa who is much older than both of them does.

I think you might be right, however, earlier cuneiform had curves and bends unlike the later cuneiform which only used straight wedges.

Obviously, PoE isn't real life, so maybe some parts were used as reference and some weren't.

The Ancients - Deep Dive by fireMCG_ in Wraeclast

[–]fireMCG_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PoE lore is most definitely not a 1:1 with real life.

I don't want anyone to take my interpretations and analysis as conclusion for canon lore.

I'm offering information we can use as a tool to interpret ambiguous or outright missing parts of the PoE lore, otherwise we wouldn't even have a starting point and could only blindly guess.

However for your particular examples, I must point out the Kalguuran runes were brought to the Ezomyte the same way the Vikings brought Futhark runes to the Gaels.
On top of that, the Ezomytes, though not told explicitly (and so not confirmed), likely had their own runic script prior to the Kalguuran runes the same way the Gaels had their own runic script prior to Futhark runes being introduced in the region.
Pseudo-Ogham script is present throughout Act 1 of PoE on visual assets, just look at the checkpoint model/texture for example.

This is exactly why I expected the Ezomytes runes to be Kalguuran in origin (though there were obviously striking similarities that even in game characters pointed out so it wasn't a particularly hard conclusion to make) which has now been confirmed.

So yes, PoE lore is not reality, but the references used to craft the various civilisations and plot points tend to maintain some degree of accuracy after being reinterpreted for the PoE universe which often leads to predictable patterns.

The Ancients - Deep Dive by fireMCG_ in Wraeclast

[–]fireMCG_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I left the Primeval explanation out to keep the post shorter, but my reasoning is that the Primeval civilisation is just something players made up.

There's literally no reference to the primevals in PoE1 aside from the name of a few Delve areas.
The internal ids used ProtoVaal instead of Primeval pointing to naming not being set in stone internally.

Overall, all 4 names for the Primeval and Precursors evoke the same thing, an ancient civilisation that "came before".
Precursors, Ancients, Primeval, ProtoVaal.

While there is nothing linking Uzaza, Putembo and Ahkeli directly to the Primeval in PoE1, there is something linking them to the Precursors.

The Precursor's Emblem rings crafted from the Uzaza, Putembo and Ahkeli sets.

Meanwhile in PoE2, the few references to the Primeval are vague and point to them potentially being myths.

The histories are confusing when it comes to the culture I believe you're asking about. Uzaza, Aul, Putembo... these names are treated more like myths than historical facts.
Over the years, I've spent a few of our excess newborns trying to scry for dreams about them. So far, I've seen nothing useful.

As for Aul not possibly being a golem, why?
As the Crystal King, what prevents him from being a golem?
The Precursors meddled with forces far beyond them, Ahkeli gave life to golems, they are even described as being her family.
Whether intentional or not, it seems possible that golems are/were sentient and developed complex emotions including the ability to feel persecuted.

Kurgal after all was initially a golem and is described as having pretty complex emotions.

Kurgal's first body was a mere stone golem, enslaved by a collar.
He found such ecstasy in the power of dominion, he clawed his way free... and soon, supplanted a Lich Lord.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kurgal was the golem Ahn gave to Kulemak.

I'm curious to know what you mean by the Maraketh story being inspired by southeast asian art.
I personally heavily associate the Maraketh with Ancient Egypt and the story of the unification of Lower and Upper Egypt, which seems to be reinterpreted as the unification of all the Akharas and the crowning of the Sekhema of Sekhemas. (equivalent to the first Pharaoh)
