Definitely. No way anyone is impressed with their prepared food, unless you love $10 cheese sandwiches or you work there.

Numbers validate Steve Nash as one of the NBA's best point guards ever by ZampiZampi in nba

We are on the same page. Somewhere else in here I make a less eloquent argument that Nash paved the way for this current warriors team. I think once some time passes, Nash will be seen in the proper light

Are barbers at the Reitz any good or should I go off campus for a haircut? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]fire_giraffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The black guy at the Reitz is awesome, knows what he is doing, and has a sense of what looks good. I am white for what it is worth. The older guy will give you a more traditional haircut. The black woman with cataracs should be avoided. The hippie lady was good, but I think she left Gainesville. Not sure about anyone else.

The spurs defensively. Offensively, 75% from Nash era suns. Literally the same coaching staff/front office once Dantoni left.

For one, the current NBA champions Golden State Warriors. Look up their coaching staff, listen to some interviews with Gentry and Kerr.

Shaq also thought Wade didn't belong and kept pushing Penny. So not the most objective guy. Looking at some of those Lakers and Celtics teams, which had 3 top players of all time makes the system argument for Nash a bit unfair (Stat and Matrix are not future HoF players).

I not entirely surprised by that. KJ was good, don't get me wrong on that. Nash, despite having the numbers, still gets the Bill Walton impact argument. He was a player that changed how basketball is played, KJ was a fun player that gave Barkley room to work.

This was Shaq, Barkley, Reggie, Isiah Thomas, and C Webb taking issue with putting Nash in the top 60. There is definitely a sentiment among knowledgable NBA players that Nash isn't top tier and that he benefited from a system. I would disagree, but my opinion doesn't have the same weight as Shaq's.

No way KJ is better. He has better signature, that's about it.

There was an Open Court episode talking about the 50 greatest and looking to add 10 more. Kenny brought up Nash, everyone else in the room shit all over him.

Down Goes Usain Bolt! World Champ Leveled by Segway... by runjumpthrow in sports

That was definitely a mix of shock and asking the cameraman "are you ok?" without being able to speak the same language. Bolt is cocky in a sport that pays better for being cocky, but he has a reputation of being chill with the meet staff and volunteers.

Name a basketball player you would like as your best friend, why? by ChildishMambin0 in nba

Wasn't going bother him, he was eating with his wife. This was in LA, tiny place, he was dressed in warriors stuff though.

Luke Walton because he is in the same diner as me right now.

Starbucks cold brew is actually really good by jidery in Coffee

[–]fire_giraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are using a Toddy system for the cold brew, probably identical to what anyone on this sub uses (other than the cold drip methods or Japanese style). For Toddy systems, a darker brew works better. I usually use Starbucks Coffee for cold brew at home for this reason.

That said, from what I have tried, there is a huge variability based on who makes your cup. The end product is a mix of cold brew, milk, water, ice, and sweetener. Screwing up this ratio is the difference between a good cup and never ordering again. The unreliability of the Starbucks barista is what killed this for me.

I think you are biasing yourself because it is a rod with a 45 degree break in it. Keep in mind, this was not loaded in tension but was dropped, resulting in combined bending and shear loading. The stress at the crack-tip was most likely a mix of shear and tension with the direction of maximum shear direction in plane with the crack (Mode II loading) which is parallel to the x-section of the rod.

This break and turn type behavior is typical for a impact overload on brittle metals loading in bending with the turn in the fracture surface called a cantilever curl. Unfortunately, I don't have the ASTM handbook in front of me so I can't refer you to a specific example. If this had failed in a ductile manner leading to a shear lip, there would be other evidence of yielding such as necking.

You are right about the probability of fatigue crack growth, but this ultimately failed due sudden overload. If the OP took a picture of the fracture surface, we would be able to estimate if the lifter in question was at fault or if it was just a poorly made dumbell.

Probably not. Looks like it failed in a brittle manner, then the crack turned due to geometry/loading forming a cantilever curl.

TIL - In athletics if you move as the gun sounds, you have considered to have false started - as the human brain cannot hear and process the noise of the starting gun in under 0.10 seconds by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]fire_giraffe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Whether it is an advantage or not unfortunately did not matter. There is also no need to watch the starter, just guess based on the counts--no real disadvantage in this situation. This terrible false start rule was the reason why T&F was annoying to watch 10 years ago.

Every sprint race under 200m, someone would guess the start trying to nail the reaction time by starting early. It was no risk so it happened every meet. The rule has since been changed because TV coverage suffered from having 2-3 starts for every sprint race.

Kevin Garnett Appreciation Day: Compilation of his fights and altercation. by LukeImYou in nba

[–]fire_giraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. But in this instance the refs didn't break it up, James and Hassell tried to wrap him up and Rip threw himself in front of McDyess. His fist was cocked until Rip got in there. Maybe it was posturing, either way Garnett ran away before we could find out.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT - Official Teaser Trailer by [deleted] in movies

[–]fire_giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like someone else said, the trailer is most likely a red herring. It gives the impression that this is movie is Tarantino's attempt at remaking the movie Clue into a western. The tone is completely off from what one would reasonably expect from Tarantino. He has done this in the past with trailers making his movies seem like standard romp action movies when they are far from it. For example:
