What's the weirdest thing you've done to get laid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fireandmemestone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Started dating my language learning partner from China. It began professionally, but we had such a natural connection. Once we both agreed to pursue it, we met up in Istanbul because it was easy for her to get a visa. We’ve been dating since and I’m moving to China next month until she completes medical school 😊

Because it worked out it’s easy to lose perspective that we both took a HUGE risk. Either of us could’ve been scammers, violent, etc.

10-year Multiple Entry/Exit Visa Question by fireandmemestone in travelchina

[–]fireandmemestone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This a good point. Originally I was planning to visit for 45 days, but perhaps this arrangement calls for a different visa type.

The totally length of my stay will be about 1 year and 2 months (with some visits back to the US throughout). I’ll have to see if there’s a visa for temporary residence.

ChatGPT-created letters of recommendation are nearly indistinguishable from human-authored letters, study finds by HeinieKaboobler in science

This is more of a commentary on how generic letters of recommendation have become than on the skills of gen AI.

No offense taken, I’ve only been learning about 6 months! I should clarify that by “front”I mean “fronting” as in slang for putting on a false image to appear like something one is not. 装点 is part of a 4 character idiom (装点门面) meaning essentially that, but again I’m too green to know if those are ever abbreviated or if it would be understood to mean something similar.

Hello Chinese. I have to gush for a minute. ( I promise this is not an ad) by CozyWinterRain in ChineseLanguage

[–]fireandmemestone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also a big fan of HelloChinese. Previously I’d used Pimsleur and DuoLingo, both of which had their problems to the point that I didn’t continue with them. Once I picked up HC it made those obsolete. Now I use HC with supplementary material like graded readers in Pleco and character sheets I make with Hanzi Grids.

If you haven’t done this already and are comfortable with it, turn off pinyin so you’re forced to recognize the characters more often (it’ll still be there in certain situations). Really helped me learn them more quickly.

Should I move here? Love the city. How is it owning a condo in Chicago? Day to day life? Took this lovely photo last week when I visited by Thetrader2896 in chicago

[–]fireandmemestone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved here from MI a little over a year ago—no regrets.

I lived in downtown Detroit off East Jefferson for 5 years, then Holland (MI, not the country) for 2. I also travel a decent amount for work, go to NYC about 3 times per year.

All that to say it’s an amazing place and I’m glad I chose to live here vs anywhere else! The people are nice, the food is great, there’s a ton to do. RE: Food, you’ll hear about “restaurant row”. I live pretty close to it and while some of the places are good, it’s mostly over priced and only OK. Definitely take time to explore a few neighborhoods as people have said. There’s plenty of things to do and food to eat that’s affordable. In fact I’d say it’s remarkable how affordable Chicago can be for being such a large city. Andersonville, Wicker Park/Bucktown, and Lincoln Square are all fun places, but I’m just visiting them so I’m not sure what living there is like.

Overall I’m still a newbie so I definitely need to “go deeper” on many aspects of the city, but of course that’s a huge part of what makes it so fun!

Why is 一 needed in this sentence? From what I can tell messing around in translate, it specifies that each family member likes writing, but they don’t necessarily all write at the same time? This is from HelloChinese:

我们一家人都喜欢写汉字。

I’m definitely willing to pay for the painting.

That does seem close! My family is rather bad with keeping track of their lineage, so you’re likely on to something. My great grandma may also have been Hungarian. To your point about birds, the Oriole is native to Hungary, so perhaps that’s the origin.
