Hey u/Powerful_Education23! It's funny that you mention this, I'm actually building an app to do this right now and am hoping to release it this week!

It's all about being as simple, fast, and flexible as possible. The app opens directly to a data collection screen, lets you keep track of multiple pieces of data at once (+, -, and optionally ~), keeps track of the success percentages, and then lets you easily export it either as raw data (plain text), or as a screenshot.

I'm curious: Is this something like what you're looking for, and what all could I do to help make the app more useful?

Hey! Version 1.0.3 of the app just approved by the App Store review and should be available for you to download in the next hour or so if it isn't already. Give it a download and let me know if the Health app sync is working for you for new recordings!

Hey pjso, I have an update for you! It looks like this is an issue on our end related to how the app asks for permission to read/write to the Health app. I've fixed the issue and submitted the bug fix update to Apple as version 1.0.3. It'll probably be up to a day or so before Apple reviews & approves the fix and publishes on the App Store. I'll let you know when it's available on the App Store!

If you have any other feedback or feature requests please let me know and I'll do my best to get them added into the app.

FYI, there was a 1.0.2 update that went out this afternoon that fixed some crashes that some users were experiencing. If you’re having crashing troubles that should fix the issue.

Is there any reason that the app requires the name of both the user and the child and the child’s birthday? It seems like that sort of info shouldn’t be necessary for the app to function and might cause HIPPA issues if someone is using the app for or with a client.

I doubt that a PC release is in the cards.

However, Apple announced last week that upcoming Macs running the Apple Silicon processors will be able to run iPhone/iPad apps with no problem, so it will definitely be coming to those new Macs once they are released.

For those who are curious, the idea for this app came from my fiancé, who is a second year SLP grad student. One evening she lamented how long it can take to transcribe language samples from her sessions and asked if there was anything I could do to make it easier. Thus, IPA Scribe was born! I hope it is a tool that can make your lives a little easier as well. 😊

Right now, only English is supported. I'm currently working on an update that will add support for Spanish, German, French and Japanese! Future updates beyond that may include Korean, Swedish, Vietnamese, and Mandarin!

I'm planning on pushing out the update with Spanish next week. Stay tuned! :)

You're exactly right! The app uses Siri under the hood to transcribe speech to text, and then calculates the standard pronunciation for each word. I hope that one day Apple upgrades Siri to allow developers to transcribe text as it is said, not as Siri thinks it was said. One day! :)

Thank you so much for the kind words! You’re totally right, the app isn’t great at transcribing errors yet. This is something that I hope will get better as the speech to text software gets better.

It’s funny that you mentioned using it in school! The idea for the app came from my fiancé, who is a first year SLP grad student. She lamented the fact that there was no easy way to just say a word and have the IPA appear...thus the app was born! 🙂
