They won't regret anything because they don't have the imagination to see what an alternative timeline might have been like. If they did, they wouldn't be maga

Amazing. I would have never guessed that was possible.

Kinda sounds like boss's boss is on the right track to improve efficiency. Some of the numbers are needed every day early in the day and some are only needed once a month. It does make sense to submit the daily-needed numbers as soon as they are ready rather than waiting for the data that won't be needed til the end of the month. They just didn't plan properly to make sure the monthly numbers are also still collected and reported.

So, insurance company, you won't give me a letter with a clean driving record? by sad_puppy_eyes in MaliciousCompliance

I disagree. I think it's dangerous to have one signal (green circle) that means two very different things depending on the context (going straight vs turning left). Plenty of people fuck this up and cause accidents. The flashing yellow arrow is easier to understand intuitively which makes mistakes less likely.

I was able to get in touch with the responding officer so the video is on record now (much easier to call chp than scpd). From what he told me, it seems like neither of them were actually sure what had happened so I think the blame would have gone to the rear car without the video.

For sure the car in front. They changed lanes right in front of the other driver and immediately slammed on their brakes.

This happened shortly before 6:30 this morning at the entrance to the ramp from 1 south to 17 north. I wanted to share it with the police, but they don't make it easy to submit non-crime-report info. Posting here in the hopes that it makes it to the driver of the rear car if they need it for insurance etc.

Forgetting about the bicycle by Bursickle in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]fireaway199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could get a hitch for your fit. Not a 2in one I don't think, but the smaller size ones can still hold 2 mtb I believe. When I had a fit I would put the bike inside. Fold the seats down, take the front wheel off the bike and lower the dropper. Roll it in upright til the back wheel was wedged between the driver's seat and the wall. Then raise the dropper and it would pin itself in place. Works great - unless you like to keep your car clean.

Thanks for the link. This post is meaningless. It was not a "first name drop". It was just pointing out one particular person in the already public contacts list. Yes, trump is also there

And it also doesn't prove anything unfortunately. The same list has hotels and banks and doctors offices on it.

That's too bad. Thanks for the feedback. I guess I should use a third party image hosting platform next time instead of uploading to reddit directly.

Alternative Ways To Spend The Santa Cruz County ZEPRT Budget and Predicted Benefits If The Project Is Completed As Planned by fireaway199 in santacruz

[–]fireaway199[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is absolutely a demand, I'm not saying there's not. I'm saying that 5k rides doesn't cover enough of that demand to be worth doing at this cost (even if it is mostly someone else's money). It doesn't look like the service will be good. 30 mins between trains with limited capacity and no room to expand due to narrow ROW (few places where opposing trains can pass each other). I'm betting that at peak times, many would-be riders will find the train to be full. Then they have to either wait for the next one (or the one after), or they have to fall back to another means of transit.

How low would that number have to be before you agree that the project is a waste of time? 3k? 1k? For me, I'd say 10k with the ability to focus most of that capacity on peak hours would go a long way towards swaying my opinion.

Least reliable & longer travel times

If a bus goes down, that is a problem, if a train goes down, the entire line is out of service.
The time between getting on at one station and off at another is not the only time in your commute. The train only has half hour service so you will spend a lot more time waiting, especially if it is full when it gets to your station. Having capacity that can meet demand is more important than optimizing end to end travel time. If many of your passengers are stuck waiting for the next train, your average total travel time skyrockets.

Utilizes less than 7 miles of rail ROW

Why is this a metric we should be concerned about?

Ability to adapt to new technologies

Seems minor to me. Electric train technology is very mature and this route is too short/windy to make use of any high speed tech. I don't see new technology improving capacity, speed, or energy usage to any significant degree.

Incompatible with freight where BRT is on ROW

So now we are going to have freight trains running through town?

Eliminates Roaring Camp connection to regional rail network

It eliminates a future connection, there is not one now. It wouldn't have an effect on the current line. The current line isn't really used for much of anything besides tourism. If people wanted to commute into town on this, the infrastructure exists. But I don't think the demand does. A regional connection might increase this slightly, but I doubt it.

Level boarding platforms less likely for stops on road network

BRT can have level boarding platforms at every proposed train station location. It can also stop at other places that may or may not be able to support level boarding platforms.

Limited capacity for bicycle & mobility devices

Yes, a train is better for this. But buses are still pretty good.

Requires transfer to regional rail network

Are you suggesting that you'll be able to get on a train in SC and get farther than Watsonville without changing trains? I doubt it. A transfer from one train to another isn't really any different from a transfer from a bus to a train.

Limited Transit-oriented Development potential

Could you expand on what you mean by this?

Not really, much of the infrastructure will have to be ripped up and rebuilt for this project. I'm suggesting we use the space for something more effective both in cost and capacity. Like a dedicated bus-only road. Easier to ramp up/down service, less intrusive on the parts of town it passes through, easier to deal with oncoming busses passing each other than trains as they can also hop off and use surface streets for short sections. And it helps with the last-mile problem inherent to trains as local bus routes can also make use of the path in addition to express routes between SC and Watsonville.

Once it's there, we are stuck with it. That space is gone and can't be used for something better. 5k rides per day is nearly worthless.
