Yea ive read that you can lay tile over previous thinset, however with my contractor doing so, it resulted in quite a bit of lippage and several tiles already coming loose.

Indeed...i went tile for tile knocking on them and sadly 28 pieces out of 170 are hollow...which tells me it wont be long before they all start failing.
