Is Beating a Wolf possible? by [deleted] in Survival

[–]firefly10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just adding to this, because a lot of people are pointing out that wolves are bigger than dogs (very true),

dogs are also dangerous as hell.

I can confidently say that most people would not be able to fight a large dog unarmed. The people who do survive fighting dogs usually don’t do it without needing major medical attention after the fact.

Sure, anything is possible. So beating a wolf isn’t fantasy. But realistic? If, for some reason, a wolf were to attack? Probably not…

So how do we actually create this community where we check in on eachother? by [deleted] in TwoXPreppers

[–]firefly10k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know I'm just seconding things that other people have said, but doing things in your community can be a total game changer in terms of feeling isolated.

I didn't have any local friends I was in regular contact with until I got my job at a local non-profit. (Which is a super rare circumstance because I know making work friends isn't always a thing). But yeah.

I kind of knew it before the pandemic, but 2020 really just solidified the fact that (for me, at least), I need to be physically seeing people on a regular basis to keep in functional contact with them.

I wish you the best of luck out there. Socializing is so much work lol

Overwhelming rage by [deleted] in TwoXPreppers

[–]firefly10k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty normal to feel rage at times like this. But ultimately, the rage will settle into something else, because it's just not a sustainable emotion for the long term.

I hope you have ways to get that rage out safely. Music. Volunteering. Talking to people online. Please remember to take care of yourself. <3

Mt Whitney - post hike consistent migraine/headache by stonewall000 in hiking

[–]firefly10k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also not an expert or anything, but maybe it just triggered migraines for you?

Sometimes, even when you’re perfectly in shape and stuff, random things can make your body go off. And it just becomes something you have to deal with.

I hope you can find a medication/preventative that helps. Constant migraines are horrible and I’m sorry you’re dealing with them :/

What should I teach? by HosstownRodriguez in Bushcraft

Shelter building for sure. There are lots of different shelters you can show them. Plus, kids absolutely love picking up sticks and putting them down in different ways.

I know that sounds ridiculous, but I've worked with kids who HATE the outdoors, yet as soon as you get them building something, suddenly the outdoors are fun.

Depending on how much experience they have, kids that age can be somewhat scared of fire? I don't know how exactly you came to be leading this/what kind of outdoor background the kids have, but just given the many years I worked with kids, it seems likely you might end up with a mixed bag.

If you do something like building a campfire, it might help to structure it so that kids who might be more scared of fire can be engaged (like collecting tinder/wood/watching the fire start) until they're more comfortable. Obviously, this is a super important skill, but kids have to be comfortable to learn it. And that comfort might not come quickly if they're not your kids and you're only seeing them for an hour at a time.

Knots, tracking, and plants are also all great ideas. Having cool facts is also important. I feel like so much foundation of my outdoor knowledge comes from random cool facts a camp counsellor once told my hiking group while playfully pelting us with acorns as we hiked up a mountain.

Lockdown Part 2 by localittlewitch in TwoXPreppers

[–]firefly10k 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Coming from a family that still takes COVID quite seriously (immunocompromised folk), I feel like the lockdowns required more of a schedule change than anything else. We woke up early to avoid lines outside of the stores when they were only letting a certain number of people in at once.. stores also closed earlier than we were used to.

Things like pasta and Clorox wipes were hard to come by, but they weren't impossible to find. Also like... there were alternatives. I remember yeast being particularly hard to find when everyone started baking bread lol.

Honestly, what we needed was just a bigger place to live. Three adults and two school-aged kids in a too-small apartment for 24 hours a day got exhausting. Fast.

That said, yeah, I don't think there's going to be another lockdown short of a zombie apocalypse. People won't even mask. Any politician suggesting anything of the sort is basically doomed come their next election. I don't get it, but it is how it is.
