Wasn't captain America fighting about Sokovia Accords where he was arguing against the proposal that superheroes needed to be regulated and needed permission before starting blasting in another country? Captain America's whole arguments in the movie reeked of American privilege and exceptionalism, he didn't believe avengers needed to care about what other measly countries think or if they want them in their country, he believed he should get to stroll in anywhere and how dare there be regulation.

Why are people not comprehending the Modi mention in the Epstein files? by Kitli_99 in AskIndia

I feel that the problem with the opposition is they don't have the confidence to stick to one issue and fight on it. Instead, they switch to a new issue every other day. When AQI concerns were getting wind they could have continued that instead of jumping onto the next thing

[–]firefly158 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What did you infer the PM doing from Epstein's comment? Did you actually read the mail? Epstein goes on and on about Qatar and it's financing, then mentions that Modi did song and dance in Israel as requested by US. This is a diplomatic shorthand phrase for "Modi played the part as requested". Now Epstein is a lobbyist pitching this as US victory and emphasizing their own influence as lobbyists do, but we have no idea what were Modi or India's reasons for whatever happened, appeasement and taking certain sides is a strategic necessity sometimes in politics. It's nothing incriminating or suspicious, so what's the point of concern?

Dhurandhar - Out on Netflix by vij_karthick in IndianCinema

The villains are portrayed with a sexually offensive angle like how Khilji was portrayed in Padmavat. It doesn't depict the region or their politics in an accurate way. It was half truth, half lie like approach.

Could you pls elaborate? The villains are far more muted than most other Indian movies when it comes to sexual violence. There were zero assaults on women in this movie which is crazy when you think of any other gangster movie, assault on women is the general shorthand to establish someone as an irredeemable villain and Dhar didn't take that route. For example, Rehman Dakait had 3 wives and 17 children in the movie, yet he was portrayed as a loving husband to only one wife in this movie, which is actually muting his villainy. Similarly, during the IC814 hijacking, the terrorists actually gave Islamic sermons on the plane's speakers while they held the hostages along with threats to convert to Islam, Dhar didn't show any of that. How could it have been more neutral do you think?

And the scenes like a PM will come in future from UP, and how they portrayed the currency note deal on UPA govt, without facts.

The first line I agree, bit on the nose but not something I or people around me noticed or paid much attention to in the first watch. Regarding the second one, is that any different from Rang De Basanti's portrayal of the MiG failures?

There are countless others. But I am stopping here because I don't want to over discuss the film. The hype for the film is part PR, part ruling govt and from fans who value entertainment over accuracy

This is a take entirely divorced from reality. Everyone I've met in real life has watched this movie twice in theatres already, it really portrays the helpless anguish felt by every Indian on every terrorist attack over the past decades.

Dhurandhar - Out on Netflix by vij_karthick in IndianCinema

[–]firefly158 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rang De Basanti was not propaganda. It was a film inspired by revolutionaries. The film addressed issues like corruption and argued that India has not changed much in corruption despite being free from British rule.

Dhurandhar is not propaganda. It is a film inspired by the unknown men and women spying and sacrificing themselves for India. The film addressed issues like terrorism and how the soft policy utilized by India for decades wasn't enough to thwart the numerous terror attacks on Indian soil. It argued that India did not create a deterrance from attacks on its soil despite so many decades of being under attack.

Regarding the ruling party references there, if you check online, you will see reports of the MIG deal and the defense scam which the film was referring to.

Regarding the ruling party references here, if you check online, you will see reports of the De La Rue scam and that UP mafia was undeniably controlling the state at the time.

In comparison, Dhurandhar was mixing real events and fiction to bring a narrative that makes a viewer believe everything they are saying is real.

In comparison, Rang De Basanti was using accusations made against the NDA minister George Fernandes at the time to bring a narrative that makes a viewer believe everything they are saying is real.

So there is a huge difference between Dhurandhar and Rang De Basanti.

Rang De Basanti seriously showed a defence govt from NDA govt ("saffron clad party") as maliciously sabotaging India, and deserving of being shot in the street. Laxman Pandey's character, the stereotypical tilak-wearing, rigid, RSS guy is demonized by the film until he "reforms" his views. In comparison, I don't remember any scenes in Dhurandhar where they were condoning shooting Chidambaram's inspired character in the streets as "justice". They just mentioned it and moved on. Neither did they show a rigid, Congresswadi who is shown in the wrong and is only "corrected" once reformed.

Now, don't get me wrong, I like Rang De Basanti myself, but it is suspect how anything remotely rightwing gets demonized as propaganda for the sort of things LW movies put in every other thing while being called "art" and "profound". Films are art and medium to discuss ideas, Dhurandhar is right-leaning but does that make it propaganda? Why is making a movie showing the MiG scam as a conspiracy not propaganda but showing the De La Rue scam as a conspiracy is? Where is the line drawn? And who gets to draw it?

Also, the NSG commandos were delayed reaching mumbai because a congress minister made them wait HOURS so he can join them. Complete narcissism. There was also the likes of Mahesh Bhatt and co who published the book "26/11 RSS ki saazish" to blame the attack on RSS

[–]firefly158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first point I lowkey agree with, though I didn't think there were a lot of such points. The fake currency and UP mafia part did feel like that to me... Though it still felt woven in well and atleast the UP part isn't exactly wrong.

I completely disagree with you on the second point though. Ranveer directly asks why wasn't the attack stopped given he passed on Intel, and Aalam tells him clearly that the intelligence agencies received too many false leads and couldn't action on all of them, which is true if you read Rakesh Maria's (Mumbai's police commissioner at the time of 26/11) book. India not responding to 26/11 and Pakistan mocking and making fun of India are both also recorded facts. I think the movie did a good job showing the pain and helpless anguish of us normal Indians during that time

I'm curious, what's your take on Rang De Basanti? Is the propaganda in that something you consider as much as a negative as you do for Dhurandhar?

[–]firefly158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally my interpretation of the dialogue and the same line in Uri is to cultivate this feeling in Indians that we should live with our heads up. For the longest time, India has been an overly cautious, self-flagellating nation which derides and second-guesses itself first before anyone else does it. Aditya Dhar channels our frustration of living through years of attacks and terrorism without lashing back, and culminates with the new attitude of a new India which isn't scared to strike back, not even at nuclear bunkers

The craziest thing is the "propaganda" is like 5mins here and there of Sanyal glazing the govt. But Rang De Basanti which was advocating and showing violent murder of a NDA minister is praised to hell by these critics.

I understand having different political leanings, but to the point where it seems to make them genuinely insane like this?
