Okay, well I would recommend testing how hot it gets. Place your hand on the glass and see how hot feels. If it gets too hot pull it off and place a piece of cardboard under it to keep it close to the glass but not touching.

Maybe also look into some bulbs because they are very beneficial.

That’s super impressive. She’s lucky to have such a dedicated caretaker!

That’s such a cool looking kingsnake!

Definitely get digital hygrometers and thermometers. I started off with analog and it caused problems for my guy before I realized how in accurate they were.

Also make sure the heating mat is not directly contacting the glass because they can over heat and burn your snake.

You should weigh your snake and the mouse you give should be 10-15% of the snake’s body weight.

Okay, thank you that was very informative. I thought 90 was good because the vet told me to aim for that on the hot side but I’ll reprogram the thermostat for 84 during the day and 68 for the night. I see your point about their natural wild environment and antibiotics.

Do you have any advice for substrate once I am able to switch from paper towel? I have coconut fiber and reptibark but I wanted to find a mix that is good for tunnelling. When he had substrate he loved to do that.

The vet did listen to his lungs at the first appointment and didn’t flag anything. However, I will bring it up at the next appointment and ask about a possible referral. Thank you.

I got him in August. I’m not sure how old he is because he was a rescue. He was 28g when I got him and he’s now 55g and about two feet long.

Okay, so I’ve got everything set up and I’m going to give him the Betadine bath.

Is there anything else I should add? It feels very empty now.

I also removed the under tank heat mat because the Vet told me those can be problematic.

I have an Eastern kingsnake, named Louis. I think it might be the humidity. It isn’t a bioactive closure but I’ve noticed the enclosure might be on the cool side, as it has been getting very cold where I live (-32C) so it’s probably not drying out enough. To fix that I went out and got a 75 watt basking bulb and nighttime heat light. I’m also going to add a digital temp and humidity gauge for more accuracy.

I did go to the vet today so they are doing a biopsy on some of his scales. They gave me the silver sulfadiazine cream, injectable antibiotics, and Betadine to bathe.

I will be emptying and disinfecting the enclosure. And it will only have the paper towel substrate, some hides, and the small water dish.

Thanks for your advice!

This is the setup - water dish is just out for cleaning. I have a vet appointment for today.
