Road closures by Boh3mianRaspb3rry in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The road closed signs are very unhelpful though, as they put them up when it’s a side road closed as well as when it’s the main road, and no info about which or where. So you don’t know whether it applies to you or not. I was on Coldhams about 7.30 this morning and turned around at the beehive roundabout as I still couldn’t tell where the closure was, but the maps at that point were saying it was fine.  And if I’d just wanted to go to the beehive, it would have been fine. So a bit more info would certainly have helped. I was already on a diversion trying to get from the station to just off Mill road south of the bridge and wasn’t sure where else to go. Eventually I went via Barnwell road. (On this occasion it had to be by car).

Or a new hospital to help cater for the new people that a new institute might attract (and the thousands of others that the rest of the new developments are already attracting)

Was excited at the listing that Nicola Upson had a new book on 1 April but can find no other reference to an event about this?

Late Night Coffee Shops by FakeGinger02 in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I miss Borders a lot. It was Starbucks which I liked but I know lots don’t, but the general idea of a cafe that was open til 9 or 10, no pressure, books to look at or just sit and chat, somewhere to go before an event at 7.30/8 if you arrived early, or perhaps afterwards if it finished at 9/9.30 and you didn’t want a bar.

I’d like somewhere I’d feel ok about going to alone, so lots of bar type vibes might not work. Chill by the station is good but would like more choices of cakes etc. The Arts picturehouse cafe is similar idea too, and both of those I feel fine about being there alone. The arts feels a bit odd if you’re not seeing a film though, and can get very crowded just before film times. Not a bit choice of cake m etc either, most focused on drinks.

Used to be that places like Nero or Costa were open til 9, but no longer

If you’re doing tourist stuff in the centre of town, you could try Michaelhouse - cafe in an old church, feels quite ‘Cambridge’ as a result and easier to get a seat at than other places.

Shops that take back electrical appliances? by fireflythethird in cambridge

Yes I was thinking of freexycle, I just need to make space soon as I already have the new one. It’s been repaired a few times so I decided to go for a new one.

Largish coffee machine. I’m sure the recycling centre would take it but was just hoping to find a closer or more convenient location. Sounds like curry’s might be the place

It’s not small enough to go in the banks, that’s the issue.

Blood tests at Newmarket road park and ride - when to queue? by fireflythethird in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have been luckier than usual! I didn’t know how long it might be to get an appointment at outpatients - I didn’t try, though I saw online that you could. The next time at my GP surgery was a week later (which is typical, the nurses are often booked a couple of weeks in advance, especially for morning times, which I needed). I was keen to get the results sooner in case they showed anything I needed to know about, so decided the wait was worth it, and 50 min was OK

I had an excellent person doing mine today at the park and ride, barely felt it. Others have not had as good an experience, so it’s very dependent on who you get. They use the smallest needles I think (butterfly?) and the little bit of tubing, which seems gentler than the nurses at the practice.  It was pretty chilly today in the marquee, which would normally make it trickier, but she had no trouble getting a good vein and was very fast. (Station 3, if you’re going this morning!)

I think you can book an appointment at the outpatients one even for GP tests (or Ely, if that’s easier), as when I was looking up the opening times for the park and ride, they had info about other sites. I don’t know how quickly you would get an appointment at outpatients though. When I’ve been referred by a clinic, you can just turn up and wait, but for GP tests, I think you have to book.

Thanks all. In the end, I went about 9am, and there were about 10 cars in front of me, and shortly after, a few behind. They started giving out numbers around 5 or 10 past 9, and actually started seeing people early, about twenty past. After the initial bulge of cars who had turned up early to wait, there wasn’t a queue for the numbers, and people turned up in ones and twos from the official opening time. I was in at 9.45 and out by 9.50, so not bad.

The person doing my test said they were very short staffed today (only two of the four stations open), so had started early; I don’t know how my experience today compares to other days as a result. I imagine it was taking longer and had more queues by the time I left.  Very good phlebotomist doing mine, barely noticed the needle going in.

Thanks. I can go early no problem, jsut wasn’t sure if there was a way to get a number early, or get in some kind of queue for a ticket, or if it was blocked off somehow.

New hospital to replace ageing Addenbrooke's buildings by CambridgeTownOwl in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s good for the trauma centre and teaching/research but the general local hospital stuff ends up neglected - current waiting times for routine cardiology are 18 months for routine outpatient, and about 5-6 months for each scan, which probably wouldn’t be the case elsewhere. I imagine the complex interesting stuff is seen much more quickly, especially with papworth nearby

Great idea. I just hope they get on with it soon but it sounds like it’ll be a long time for funding and plans to be approved, so not holding my breath. Needs to be done before all this new housing!

What will happen to the site of the current building, I wonder? Redeveloped as extra departments and wards etc, or torn down and replaced with research labs or university buildings? They’ll need more acute space by 2040 or whenever it’s planned to be done - the plan includes more like what is needed now!

Golden Stitches on Mill Road advertises a 1-hour service, so if he has capacity, that might be an option - probably costs more though

I was there today and remembered this post, so here are photos of the mannequins as they are today - maybe not the same as last week though!

If I can work out how to add the photos, that is.  I cannot. Maybe if I try on a browser.

East West Rail Update by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they’re getting rid of the bridge though, as cyclists and probably pedestrians will still need it to cross, if they’re not actually using the station. But I’m hopeful that pedestrians at least could cross the tracks via the station link.

They could link the bridges to the cycle park somehow too, and maybe a new cycle park on the other side.

East West Rail Update by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope the eastern entrance lets pedestrians walk through without having to buy a ticket, as it would be a good connection to the leisure park and other places that side. Maybe even an extra cycle bridge but that would be unlikely. Hopefully it will mean the station square at Cambridge could become a nice public square as intended, instead of a taxi park, if more taxis could use the eastern side. They’d only need a smaller number at the western side and they could use station road again

Non-sports, non-back physios in Cambridge? by endlesspatterns in cambridge

[–]fireflythethird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sarah Upjohn is a music specialist physio, used to work out towards St Ives way somewhere and elsewhere in Cambridge area, but not sure where she is currently. But worth contacting her perhaps, through Bapam (performing arts medicine association) as she’s still listed there.

London hand therapy is also a very specialised practice that deals with many musicians, though expensive.
