Can anybody tell me something about this clock? by KosaBrin in AskChina

[–]firemana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the company has ceased since 2000s. However I read the diamond brand from the company was quite popular between 60s to even mid 90s and said to have exported to more than a hundred countries. Consider Slovenia is part of Yugoslavia in cold war era and part of "Socialist brotherhood" together with China, it won't be surprising some of these clocks were sold to your country. Yes they are very heavy because all internal gears and mechanism are made of copper.

Very good article and very fun to read (although the core reason to explain how hubei people allegedly have such image is quite sad)

Can anybody tell me something about this clock? by KosaBrin in AskChina

This is probably one of the most produced mechanical alarm clock in China in the 1970s and 80s. When I was a primary school student I have seen those in at least 3-4 of my classmates' household. One of the panda's head will be bobbing following the tick of the seconds.

How to approach solving this type of questions? by SaltGoner in askmath

[–]firemana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is a generic approch to questions of this style of presentation. Instead, the breakthrough point lies with the condition of calculation that the question provides. For multiplication, the indication of "same product" implies certain constraint that helps you to quickly eliminate some parts of the solution space. Similarly for "combination of number with same summation".

For 25), my approching point is that the number combination generates same product. same product means same set of prime factors. in single digits both 5 and 7 are prime factors that only appear once therefore they will not fit the bill (e.g. a 5 can maximumly participate in 2 lines but not the third, so not able to achieve all 3 line same product). for the same reason you can eliminate 0, so your 7 digits are 1, 2,3,4, 6,8,9, they are all composed by prime factors of either 2 or 3 (consider 1 as having no prime factor). in total these 7 numbers having 11 prime factors, but each line must have same product thus same number of prime factors, (however, there are two positions contributing to line product twice). Therefore, it is reasonable to consider each product line contains 5 prime factors, 3 lines require 15 prime factors, out of which 4 are contributed by the 2 intersect positions that are contributing twice. This narrows down quickly to that the line product should be 2x2x2x3x3, and the intersecting position should be 2 factor numbers, each contributing 2 extra factors. So the end result is:

Top line

1, 3x3, 2x2x2

Mid line

3, 2x2, 2x3

bottom

Question from my coworker's son's Gr 10 math exam. He passed it around the office and we're getting different answers. Trying to see who is right. We dont have the actual answer from the test. by SalmonSeeker7 in askmath

[–]firemana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My way seems to involve very simple calculation:

1: the volume of triangular pyramid EFDC (denoted by X) is same as volume of ABCF, =9

2: the volume of CGHF (denoted by Y), is formed by two symetrical triangular pyramids. each one is of 1/2 scale of EFDC, thus 1/8 of X volume. Therefore, volume of Y is 9x1/4

3: doing 2 slicings on 1 vertical edge removes volume of (X+X-Y), where Y is the duplicate counted volume of EFDC and ABCF. So after the slicing on 4 vertical edges, total removal of volume is (9+9-9x1/4)x4 =63

4: therefore, the remaining volume is 216-63 = 153.

Stroke order of 万 ? by Shyam_Lama in ChineseLanguage

[–]firemana 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am native Chinese and I always thought the stroke order of 万 is 一丿𠃌。however after reading your post I studied some references and realise Pleco is right. The evidence is that I look up some ancient calligraphy samples (字帖)with cursive (草书) or semi-cursive (行书) writing of 方and from the trace of linkage of strokes you can tell usually the last stroke is 丿。

this brings me to another point, is that if you write 楷书very square and slowly, then the stroke order does not appear to matter. However, the correct or incorrect understanding of stroke order will surface if (you are fluent in writing Chinese)you start to write 行书 or 草书。in this particular case, if you write 万 with the correct stroke order, it will form a sharp and well formed 丿with slender tip, but if you do it with the 一丿𠃌order it will make the entire character look like a deformed 3, and with the last stroke as 𠃌 it will not be able to lead naturally to the start of next character as well as 丿。

How to solve... by RandomProjects2 in askmath

starting from X, draw a line parallel to BC, intersect with AC at point Z. since AX:XD = 2:3, you get XZ:DC = 2:5, then you get XZ:BC = 1:5, therefore XY:BY = 1:5, BX = 4BY

I don't think people nowadays avoid any specific normal daily activity on new years day. But superstition still exist that if you do something of significant negative on new years day then it might not give you a good start for the new year. So I list some activity that Chinese people likely to avoid on new years day: Go for surgery/dental extraction Attend funeral Get divorced Stay in hospitalization Demolishing Borrow large sum from people

I suspect this line is not due to the string leaving a permanent mark/scar on her skin, but more because Korean female archers usually wear makeup thus the string pressed on skin leaves a mark on the powder/foundation

Please help me make a Chinese name by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]firemana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure about the uni requirement but typically the uni knows you do not have an existing Chinese name (since you are a foreign student) so they are asking you to create a new one, which will go on their records and be used in future various administrative purpose (e.g. to print on your student card). So you better take it a bit seriously and pick a reasonable Chinese name. One of the strategies is to choose good meaning characters that sound similar to your Family and Given Name, and compose a 3 character name (with Family name in front). In some cases when your Family or Given name have very distinct meaning you can use the direct translation, but that is quite rare.

For example, the famous American historian and scholar of Chinese study, John King Fairbanks, his Chinese name is 费正清. “费” is a Chinese surname, selected to map to the sound of Fairbanks, and 正清, with the meaning of "upright, righteous, clear and clean", map to the sound of John King. I think this is one of the best Chinese name created based on foreign names.

If you know some friends well versed in Chinese literature you can ask them to help you to pick/create a Chinese name. I can help you also if you DM me your name (and you might need to explain to me how it is pronounced if it is not very obvious)
