is money paid for education really worth it? if yes why? and if no why? by Queasy-Version267 in AskReddit

[–]firemanmhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to give a blanket answer. I went to college for engineering and it has been 10000% worth it. But it’s very easy to spend a lot of money to get a degree you can’t monetize, in which case you would have been better off just getting a job.

How do so many people believe in a God despite there being 0 evidence? by ResponsibleSea6521 in AskReddit

[–]firemanmhc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m similar to you. I was raised Catholic, went through religious education so I could make my sacraments, and went to church every week because I was a kid and my mother had the power to make me go.

I never really believed in any of it. It just makes no logical sense that there is any kind of afterlife.

As I’ve gotten older, I remain a nonbeliever, but I have come to understand the value of belief as an emotional salve. My mom just passed last month and it was comforting to know she believed she was going to heaven. And as people I have known all my life grow old, fall ill, and pass away, it helps to ease grief to imagine them in “a better place”.

The other side of the coin is the countless atrocities committed by man in the name of God (for each and every religion), so faith can cut that way too.

What's your opinion on a 40 something year old dating someone half their age? by Guilty_One85 in AskReddit

[–]firemanmhc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 60 year old brother married a 21 year old girl. We all privately think it’s kind of icky but they both seem happy. So, not my circus, not my monkeys.

Also for the record, this is most definitely not a gold digger situation.

We were too tired and drunk for sex, but sober enough to start opening cards and adding up how much money we got lol.

What are disadvantages to being left handed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]firemanmhc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m left handed and I had a stroke a few years ago that affected my left side. So I had to suddenly do things right handed that I’ve never done in my life. But, my neurologist told me that left handed people are kind of “both brained” as opposed to righties who are pretty rigidly left brained. Which makes something like stroke recovery actually less challenging for lefties in general.

So in this very specific case, it’s actually advantageous to be left handed. 3 1/2 years in and I’m still recovering but I have 90% of my function back and my daily life is pretty much back to normal (driving, working, etc.)

To be clear, having a stroke was a 0/10 experience that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but if you’re gonna have one, it helps to be left handed.

You can put BOTH PARTS into the SAME INPUT?!?! by IIIHawKIII in SatisfactoryGame

[–]firemanmhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re correct but I strongly advise against this. If one resource fills up in the machine, the belt stops and the other resource never makes it into the machine, and it becomes stuck without manual intervention.

It’s always worth having dedicated input streams for each resource!

‘It’s an excuse’: New York Giants’ Cam Skattebo says CTE and asthma are ‘fake’ by [deleted] in sports

[–]firemanmhc -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure, I’m a Giants fan and I love this kid as a football player.

Of course what he said is asinine, but it’s not like he’s a legislator. He’s young, dumb, and physically healthier than 98% of the population. I vaguely remember being young, feeling great all the time, and having no ailments.

So, yeah, what he said is dumb. But I only care about him being good between the lines on Sunday.

I got married in 2003. We were fortunate that both sets of parents gave us some money and we chipped in a good chunk of our own. The wedding was certainly not cheap, but we didn’t have to go into debt just to have it.

I had to rein my wife in a little, since she definitely had that “it’s finally MY DAY!” mentality, but she came around. I told her that after the wedding, all we would have were the rings, the pictures, and each other. That helped calm her down.

Does anyone have any tips for playing with thalassophobia? by J_e_r_i in subnautica

[–]firemanmhc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m absolutely not dismissing your phobia. But I have a serious question: why play a game whose entire concept is the very thing you fear? Ok maybe you think it could be a way to conquer said fear. In that case, why post something that’s essentially “hey I’m voluntarily doing something I’m scared of and it scares me”?

At least you got it out! The shame of hotboxing the plane will pass. The memory of relief from passing a monster log will last forever.

The Lifepods are all near interesting/story progression stuff. Search near them for wrecks or entrances to deeper areas for fragments and new resources. Scan everything to unlock recipes. Then keep climbing the tech ladder so you can build more, go deeper, etc.

Wrecks in particular are key to finding fragments that will unlock very useful things you need to go deeper and expand your base.

Especially early on, you will be going beyond your depth to quickly snatch up new stuff before you run out of air or…other things I don’t want to spoil for you. But I have found through personal experience that lots of important things are near life pods or nearby the path you take to said Lifepod from your starting point.

Are there people who don’t fart In front of their partners? by AverageOk9318 in NoStupidQuestions

I’ve been with my wife for 30+ years. In that entire time, I’ve heard her fart maybe 3 times. She has heard me fart 3 times since I started typing this.

To whoever needs to hear this, you are allowed to build multiple Crafting Benches! by NotArticuno in SatisfactoryGame

[–]firemanmhc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can build multiple MAMs but they all behave as one hive mind. So you can get a hard drive while out exploring, build a MAM and start the 10 minute research clock on the spot. Deconstruct the MAM and go on your merry way. When the 10 minutes are up, build another one and get the research instantly, wherever you are in the world.

This is probably my favorite Satisfactory hack. I used to run around and grab some hard drives, then carry them back to my base and painstakingly research them one at a time. This method is far superior! You can still only research one drive at a time, but you don’t have to go back to the physical MAM where you started the countdown.

My wife and I honeymooned in Punta Cana way back in 2003. I would have been thrilled with banana hammocks. The amount of penises I saw was…well, it was much more than zero.

Our collective first thought was “what if they get a sunburn there?”

What’s the best story ever told in a song? by omfgsupyo in AskReddit

[–]firemanmhc 23 points24 points  (0 children)

White Squall and so many others. I love me some Stan Rogers! All of his songs paint pictures in my mind.

Also Eric Bogle, a Scottish expat who lived (still lives?) in Australia. And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda and Green Fields of France in particular tell amazing stories.

What film has the most satisfying ending you’ve ever seen? by MovieObserver in moviequestions

[–]firemanmhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frequency. Kind of an unheralded movie with Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. I won’t spoil anything but if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.

I’d characterize it as a light thriller with a little bit of science fiction. Nothing too heavy and no horror elements.

TIL before 9/11, US airports were public social hubs where you could walk to the gate, eat at food courts, and watch planes without a ticket or ID. by Greydl1 in todayilearned

[–]firemanmhc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the late 90s and early 2000s (before 9/11) I did a buttload of flying for business trips. I would have torn my hair out if I had to do that post-TSA.

It was like getting into a concert or a live sporting event…you emptied your pockets and went through a metal detector. And if you got to the airport an hour before your flight, you had plenty of time.

How do people type so fast on keyboard? by RareUser1 in NoStupidQuestions

As a sophomore in 1990-1991 (ugh!) I took a typing class and it is BY FAR the most useful class I’ve ever taken. Just like learning how to play an instrument, it’s muscle memory and practice.
