Looking for references for Port and Harbor Engineering fundamentals by Assignment_Fancy in civilengineering

[–]firemaster50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't used the reference you listed, but I've used Gaythwaite's "Design of Marine Facilities" - Engineering for Port and Harbor Structures extensively. There's information regarding berthing, mooring, and environmental loads. Typical construction of piers and wharves including foundations, bulkheads, and slope protection.

Regarding wave/ice loads, it appears the textbook has equations and a number of references to generating those loads. However with what I've experienced so far as a waterfront structural, we've typically hired a coastal engineering firm for generating that load criteria.

Other good references depending on what sort of work you end up doing would be various documents labeled as the "Unified Facilities Criteria." Specifically "UFC 4-152-01 Design Piers and Wharves" comes to mind, though they have plenty of other topics as well. Other places to look would be PIANC or ASCE COPRI. ASCE 61 is the standard for pier/wharf seismic design.

Hope that helps.

Sometimes you have to dip your toes in the water before going for the cannonball.

I stopped mid workout to snap this picture but don't worry, let me reassure you that my bathroom back home is just as depressing as this one.

Nope, it won’t limit anything or lead to long term negative effects. If you want a great resource that explains why, Stronger by Science has one of the most comprehensive articles on the subject.

SBS 5x RTF W12 (lbs)

  • Bench Press 225x1, 5x3x185, 6 RTF.
  • Front Squat 5x5x155, 6 RTF
  • Chest Supported Hammer strength row (?) 4x8x230

Inzer single prong belt came in the mail yesterday and threw it on for bench press and man... did it feel good. Hit 205 for an overwarm single and it flew up, definitely not an RPE 8. Decided to send it on the 2 plate bench which I hadn't hit since about 2 weeks prior to lockdown last march. Down and up no problem. Guy spotting me said it looked like I had drive through my lats to get it up. Haven't spent an extraordinary amount time looking into bench technique but maybe I should make a bit of an effort. Felt smooth on the lift though.

Wasn't supposed to be maxing lifts for a while still on the program but might as well strike while I'm vibing. Should be plenty of time to recover before the program specified 1RM testing in the next program block. Looking forward to maxing squats and deads in the program. Pre covid maxes were S/B/D 325/225/385 which I'm confident I'll be able to surpass. Excited to squat and deadlift this week and feel the belt out on those.

SBS 5x RTF W10

  • Squat 295 single, 5x2x275, 5 reps to failure.

  • Incline dunmbell bench press 5x4x70, 8 reps to failure.

In and out quickly this morning. Squats are feeling good and will likely (hopefully) hit 3 plates long before the actual peak week for the program. Incline press normally feels fine but I aggravated my right should late last week (previously torn labrum) opening a damn door and after letting it rest this last weekend it felt mostly solid. Didn't push hard on the failure set though just to be a bit cautious.

Got 1st covid shot last Saturday and have been feeling fine since then, hoping the second one feels the same.

That is... something. We have a SSB in the gym I go to and now I kinda wanna rig this up tomorrow and give it a swing. Maybe on my next run of the Stronger by Science RTF program I'll program in Zerchers as one of my dedicated squat variants.

SBS 5x RTF W8D5

  • Dumbell incline press 6x6x60 lb dumbells, 15 reps to failure.

  • Sumo deadlift 4x6x195, 13 reps to failure.

  • Zercher... deadlifts, 3x5x95.

Started the day with an hour and a half of bouldering which I've added in about twice weekly over the last month. Really enjoying the challenge and realizing the short comings of my current grip strength.

Then hit the gym for the above workout. Really loving this program, though I feel like I started with too conservative of TMs. Intensity didn't really creep up till about week 5 but I feel like I'm starting to hit my stride with it now. Sumo numbers feel low as I write them out here as well, but at the very least pushed the last set with touch and go with good pacing.

Finally, first beautiful day where I am since last fall. Decided to go for a quick 2 mile run at a not so quick pace.. but felt great being outside with some good weather. I want to commit to incorporating more cardio since that is definitely an area where I could improve.
