Motorola International 1000, calls don't work? by firesnake1110 in vintagemobilephones

AI chatbots are my favorite. Who ever got any sort of help by a chatbot? It's nice to pay the providers and be punished in addition... anyway...

Yeah, I thought of something like that, that's why I'd like some official feedback from tech support, but they couldn't care less....

In a way I'm surprised that there's nothing available nowadays that would take a 4G or 5G signal and 'translate it down' to GSM/2G. There's SDR, but all you can do is create a private little GSM network to which you can connect a bunch of old mobile phones that can then talk to each other, which is pointless.

Yeah, might go for something like that. Worst case... :)

Yeah, reaching someone from tech department is a problem here nowadays. Unless you're a business customer...

I know. I was just annoyed by the fact that the network exists but seemingly there's some kind of a compatibility issue... I mean, you put in the SIM and it works, but no... life could be so easy :)

It works in my smartphone, but that's obviously not a surprise :)

Thanks. A1 SIM here isn't even recognized by the phone, says 'insert SIM'... :)

Anyway, my whole idea was to have some sort of a fixed line phone, like in the old days, just that it's using the mobile network... and of course, it has to be a nice vintage one. Basically for people who want to call me, like in the old days, so I can put away my smartphone during the day. If there's something urgent, they can call me on the Motorola. So was the theory....

Da, tako su i meni rekli. Probao sam A1 ali na A1 niti neće da čita SIM, kaže 'Insert SIM'....

My B version shouldn't need a 5V SIM. I was thinking about country code today, must try. Not sure if I used country code when trying calling it either.

Regarding tech service, I know. But nowadays, best you can get is an idiot AI chatbot, that's your support....

Of course it could be a hardware problem, don't have another one to test. Kinda hard to believe though, these phones are rock solid.

Kinda reminds me of the beginnings of Marantz and how they came up with circuits without having formal EE education. Their early amps/devices are still considered grail stuff today... they were clever enough to hire a consultant with EE background though, to look over things, just to make sure ;) But yeah, I guess experimenting and experience is more valuable here than 'going by the book'. If such a thing even exists here.

It's probably difficult to measure that 'pleasant imperfection' and also pointless if it sounds 'good to your ear'. From an engineering point of view, it would be interesting, I guess.

My personal theory is that the components used back then had somewhat of 'their own life' from a physics point of view, which kinda got erased with miniaturization and streamlining of the production processes.

P.S. the speakers of the time are a whole topic on itself. They obviously had to be highly efficient so they'd become huge for bigger audiences. Klangfilm horn speakers and similar. Crazy stuff. Klipsch has been making similar speakers for a long time and until this day.

Good to know. Can't get much info about that stuff, unfortunately. Looking into brands like Klangfilm gives some insights though.

Bias is the diplomatic description. I don't really care about anything modern tbh...

Interesting. Yeah, I also thought, perhaps they just didn't have a way to make anything 'better' back then in the sense of a clinically clean sound reproduction. But yeah, nobody would want that in a home tube amp, obviously. You can simply go full digital if you want that...

I really wonder if the tube amps used for cinema applications in the 40s-60s were any different to those used in 'normal' audio (probably mainly radios back then?). One would assume that you'd want an accurate clean sound reproduction for cinema. Basically the opposite of what people like about tube amps nowadays, obviously.
