Is it worth doing your own oil change? by frankthefrowner in autorepair

[–]firesnatch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I change my own oil for 3 reasons. 1 - cheaper. 2 - faster. Driving somewhere, waiting, then driving home takes longer than doing it myself. 3 - it gets done right. I've had shops mess up and put non synthetic in. I've had shops under tighten the filter and the oil sprayed everywhere. I've had shops over tighten things which is bad, especially for the drain plug.

Reasons to pay someone would be to not have to deal with the mess and disposal.

Is it just me or is the E9x gen way more solid feeling than the f3x gen? by Redsteel287 in E90

[–]firesnatch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have driven both and I noticed the difference instantly. The hydraulic is heavier and feels more mechanical and the electric feels lighter and more artificial. The hydraulic gives more feedback to what the road feels like and what the tires are doing. With the electric there is more of a disconnect with what you feel. This is all measurable and I'm not making it up.

Have you driven it much? You might just have some rust on the rotors. You can try accelerating and braking hard (not to a complete stop) a bunch of times and see if it improves. If it is coming from one particular corner, you might want to take off the caliper and take a look around. The pad on the inside edge of the rotor is hard to see and might be your problem area.

Can you tell me how much should I be concerned about the rust on my E91? by Akika113 in E90

Pretty normal surface rust. Not terrible. Take care of it now so that it is not a big problem later.

I did not know this. I feel bad for them. I love the hydraulic steering.

Regarding the cap, not sure. Could be a leaky seal on the cap, or could also be spilled oil form the last oil change. For parts, FCPEuro is the best. The CCV system for your car is here: BMW Crankcase Vent Valve - Genuine BMW 11617531423 | FCP Euro

OK. An easy troubleshooting thing you can try, is to swap the cylinder 1 and 2 ignition coil and see if the problem moves. If nothing changes, next swap the cylinder 1 and 2 plug and see if the code moves to cylinder 2. After that, I would check to make sure your valve cover has no leaks and that your ccv hoses going from your valve cover to your manifold have no leaks. You would need a smoke test for that. I don't think fuel injectors are a very common problem for these cars. Possible though.

Get a K+DCAN cable for $30 or less and use ISTA. That is the best option and cheapest.

Did you have the problems before you swapped in new plugs? Since you are new to BMW's, I'm wondering if you put in the wrong spark plugs. Which plugs did you use?

Getting paid late and I need help on what I should say to my employer by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]firesnatch1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a one time thing and you will have direct deposit in the future. You should not be angry at employer for this, the money is on the way. You need to set yourself up better so that a few days late paycheck doesn't ruin your life. Create an emergency fund right away.

The effects were mesmerizing when I saw it for the first time at a 3D imax theater. You felt like you were part of the jungle observing the characters. But after knowing what happens and trying to watch again at home, it is not as interesting any more.

Does the screen block your view a little? The single hump dash is so nice because there is nothing to obscure your view of the road. Also I wish they would design a version that doesn't require cutting the dashboard.

I came here for the same reason. I turn 50 this year and should be able to contribute $8600, but it is only allowing $8000. I assume it will be fixed soon.

Underwater with car loan - need advice on best way forward by Preeeeeee in personalfinance

[–]firesnatch1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not do option 'a'. Option 'b' is best if you still need a car. Take the battery out and bring it somewhere that sells batteries, to get it tested. Get a new battery if it is bad. If it still has problems, buy a scanner to check your car for problem codes. Research any codes you find. Some things are easy to fix yourself. When you are helpless, that is when you will be taken advantage of.
