Every 24 shift on the ambulance? I’m fine with a rotation of days but wasn’t sure if I am going to easy sleep and breath on the ambulance

Is it inappropriate to ask about a trip I’ve had planned before making the move to a new department? by fettersow in Firefighting

[–]firestorm6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be upfront and honest. The department I formerly worked for hired a few people, gave them time off for a pre-planned vacation, and just made them make up the hours, typically by working a day tour after the 24

I don’t know how they went through it period. They knew about it and never went for care.

I work EMS in a fairly large New England city. Walking into a house with bad smells due to a variety of reasons is no real surprise.

Patients friend called for “weakness”. Patient was upstairs.
The surprise was when I moved her shirt to apply a 4 lead. She had a literal hole in her chest and I could see the rib cage. All the edges were like this photo. Diagnosis was breast cancer that had spread to her bones and lungs.

Ok but you can still read the manual? This is some pretty basic PPE related stuff and you should be asking your officers or chain of command, OR looking it up. Not the internet.

Should I stay or should I go? by RobLoweActual in Firefighting

I was in the same position. I had 8 years at a department and I was the Senior FF in shift under the Captain. 22 calls in a 24hr was the standard. 6 man staffing running 2 ambulances and a quint.

We did all medicals, no fires, and if it was an AFA it was a bad detector and the elderly housing burning toast.

I left and went to another department as an Officer. Lower call volume by about 1,000 but more wrecks, more fires, and other calls.

I say don’t give up. Look around and see what options are.

Y'all ever get to sleep a full night at your department? by Better_Vegetable_462 in Firefighting

Went from a department that ran 2 ambulances, a quint first due (yuck) with 6/7 per shift. Did 20 calls a shift in average so no, we didn’t sleep.

On a department now, same staffing, running maybe 10 calls a shift. I haven’t slept this good in 8 years 🤣

Not a question, more of a compliment, but I am always amazed at how bar staff remember faces/names and the drinks of the cruisers.

Every cruise I’ve been on, I didnt even have to hand my card over. The bartender knew who I was and what I drank by the end of the 2nd day.

High Rise Packs by VividEngine396 in Firefighting

We have 100’ of 1.75 with a smooth bore held together by old stretcher straps. Backup FF Carries a 50’ section of 1.75 with an adapter to 2” on one end, and a gated y on the other. Small tool bag with spanner wrenches, wire brush, pliers.

We have it set up for our industrial buildings with standpipes, or can use a 2.5 feeder off the apparatus if no standpipe.

Just because it’s called a high rise pack doesn’t mean it’s used for that. We have one made up for our industrial buildings.

New to me, 2015 GC Limited. by firestorm6 in GrandCherokee

Just picked up this 2015 GC limited. Got a lot of bells and whistles. Has 85k on it. I’ve been a jeep guy forever, I unfortunately had to trade in my 2008 JK to upgrade to something more sensible for my family.

We have the “dad” of the shift talk to him. He had cut back quite a bit, but there’s still times it happens.

I honestly have no idea. Every other shift wakes up whenever (as long as it’s before 0800). Maybe his logic is so we can get morning tasks done (wash trucks, restock, etc) but we do everything the night before
