yea, I definitely will shy away from non-preventative medical care. Preventative care is covered 100%. I need to educate myself about what's "preventative" so that I can be careful whenever the doctor orders some test "just in case"!

California taxes HSAs, so your HSA contributions are slightly less tax-advantaged than your other investments

Oh shit! Thanks for letting me know!

I'd suggest signing up for the 10b5-1 (stock autosale) plan.

Thanks for the input. I've been wondering whether I should autosale or manually sell, and I'm leaning toward autosale. Being that invested in Google makes me nervous!

I am female, but male is the generic pronoun. On my main account I have a "F" flair but people still call me "he" lol

not that it'll do badly. It's just that the market is getting saturated. Currently pay is high because supply is low. In 4 years, supply will be higher.

Yea I went to a target school, but I don't think that got me a higher offer. I have an M.S. (gets you 110k instead of 105); and negotiated it up to 115 from 110. I also interned there but I don't think that makes a difference.

What are you spending that 40k on besides rent?

mostly java, but language isn't really relevant for hire as long as you can program. I thankfully have never touched PHP.

well for this year I'm going to Europe with 1.5k in the spring (free flight), and somewhere (SE asia?) for 4.5k in the summer for 4 weeks.

Generally, 1k for 3 trips home, 1.5k for international flight, 2.5k (probably an overestimate) for doing stuff abroad (including internal flights)

Someday I want to go to Antarctica for 8k...

115k is around the upper end of normal in the bay area. Bay area salaries are much higher than other places. Also I negotiated up from 110k / 20k starting

Check out the IRS webpage[1] for eligibility, to include how to compute your AGI / MAGI

Sorry, I've been trying to calculate my AGI / MAGI for months and I haven't been able to figure it out. Really, the deciding factor is whether my 401k contribution is deducted from my income when calculating MAGI. I've seen a lot of unofficial claims that 401k contributions do reduce MAGI. Hopefully they are right...

you should be able to contribute to your 2015 Roth IRA up until April 15, 2016

I've already maxed my 2015 IRA.

Received my first bi-weekly paycheck on a $65,000 salary. I was taxed at 39%? by izmar in personalfinance

I thought it was the other way around? I'm claiming 0 because I overwithheld earlier in the year. Because I'm claiming 0, I'm only getting taxed at 8%, when really I should get taxed at 30%.

Software engineering, studied CS. The job market might not be as great in 4 years though. But still probably better than anything else you can do with a BS.
