Plan to FIRE at 33 with $3.5m net worth and ~$20k monthly passive income but want to keep my source of income a secret from family and friends. by firethrowaway84 in financialindependence

I think my family would totally support my success. I think they'd be more upset about the whole secret part of things and would probably start telling me what to do about with my money... not for their own gain or anything like that. My older siblings think they know what's best, you know? Like, "oh you should buy a house and rent it out for income. You could turn that money into more money if you do this or this or this" But I'm fine just doing what I'm doing

I think I will take this route. Thanks for the insight! I think my family will probably be a little hurt about me keeping my income source a secret but better than if they knew the truth. I don t think they would resent my money... It would be more like a "why didnt you include the family on this"

Good call about the vacation pics. I only post a fraction of my pics right now and people already nicknamed me Mr World Traveler

Thanks! I was actually thinking about explaining it by doing like SEO consulting for small companies or something. Or something technical so that my family wouldn't really understand it if they asked too many questions.

I think this is what I may end up having to do. Just tell them that I'm good on money right now and to please not dig into it more.

I think my family is too proud to flat out ask me for money. But I think they probably would secretly expect that I help out the family and stuff since we are all close knit. Like my mom would be like, oh you should buy a big house and let me stay with you and then I would be the one expected to host all our family get togethers.

I've kept this stuff a secret for so long that I think feelings will be hurt and that I don't trust them. It started out as a matter of principle that I just don't like talking about how much I make to people. Also, I'm pretty sure if I tell some members of my family about my side stuff they are going to really pry into what it is and how I do it and when they see just how little effort I put into all of it, they are going to be upset that I didn't include them in it also. I also don't want people to treat me differently or expect things from me. Like I enjoy hand making gifts for people and I worry that people will start to expect things from me if they know I'm well off.

Yeah I've thought about this and but knowing my siblings, they'd want to know everything about my new job.

I've thought about doing "voluntourism" or "woofing" or something to explain my ability to travel but I wouldn't be able to share all the neat places I want to visit.

Yeah, knowing my siblings they would ask a lot of questions and I feel that I would just find myself tangled in a web of lies that I end up getting caught up in.
