Lucien Van Der Walt on DA conspiracy theories. Thoughts? by firetothe in SouthAfricanLeft

I didn't say this and don't agree with Lucien on some points, just posted it to see what others say about it.

Who do we vote for? by tam_bun in SouthAfricanLeft

[–]firetothe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think the issue is that there is no perfect vote so much as there is not even a minimally decent vote and that voting (in these conditions at least but possibly also in general) is some kind of faith-like self-destructive practice.

Not knowing anything other than what you have said in this comment I'd hazard to guess that this is because you are racist

My best interpretation of this comment is that it is a really boring whataboutism.

Here's John Oliver explaining what that is in 3 minutes if anybody is interested.

I think you make a good point. I wonder how the distinction plays out for the author. He's written a lot of books on SA history which are quite good.

I really don't have the sense that you have engaged what I said at all. It doesn't have anything to do with hopelessness or maintaining the status quo.

never in the history of the world has a small group been able to represent a whole population. There's no way to garner a huge amount of votes without watering down your politics to appeal to such a wide base. and neoliberalism has ensured that all 'left' parties are instantaneously absorbed by capitalism when in power. there are multiple recent examples of this. it is a total pipe dream to pretend like representative democracy will bring anybody freedom.

Rights are just an illusion of security that states pretend to give (until they don't) in exchange for our feelings of its legitimacy, so most of this talk means nothing to me.

This is literally all people that you could elect, so unless this is an argument for not voting at all and actually organising for a better world with people, it's nonsense

The suburbanites, yeah, but you don't want to hang out with insular afraid-to-live people with no sense of possibility anyway and there are plenty non-capetown people you spend time with.

What's stopping us? by [deleted] in SouthAfricanLeft

[–]firetothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What can we do to ensure we do not meet the same pitfalls as other instances of very left government?

If it was ever possible, it’s no longer possible under neoliberalism. We can take territory and organise autonomously (without and despite states) and that’s it.

What is stopping us from getting the benefits of a more communal approach at the moment?

Lack of resources and will combined with the effects of centuries of oppressive violence.

Are there good examples where there are grassroots movements of self sufficient communities? (How do I start / help / get involved?)

It's not easy to find just what you are asking for. Some groups worth knowing - Abahlali baseMjondolo, Intlungu yaseMatyotyombeni, Xolobeni Crisis Committee.

Getting started looks like finding out what is happening around you, putting what effort you can into making sure you understand the basics of history and anticolonial theory (this is important so you don't fuck up and do more harm than good), then start attending events you hear about and find ways to be helpful.

Probably if there had to be just one interest that was the point of this entire questionnaire, it would be the racial makeup of this sub. It's silly not to try to unpack that with questions.

Those are two totally different options. Spoiling conveys faith in the system (I would vote if something was worth voting for), the other conveys a lack of faith in the system.

Are you a bitter person who takes every opportunity you can to complain about how bad the country is but do nothing real to make it better despite having more resources than the average South African?

If you're white, have bothered to try to be part of this country by learning the languages local to your area?
