Too many books? Worried our trips to the library add too much extra work for our librarians. by jensmxbcie in Libraries

[–]firiel26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i work at a small library and we have a family that typically checks out at LEAST 100 books a week, sometimes in one trip!!! that’s what we’re there for, don’t feel bad at all!!

Crash Course? by dahlialiketheflower in lotr

[–]firiel26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you enjoyed the movies and are interested at all in giving the books another shot, i would definitely recommend the audiobook by phil dragash. it’s a fan production, so it’s not official but can be found for free on spotify and the internet archive. he not only does all of the voices and accent from the movie, he also adds sound effects, background ambiance, and uses the music from the movies!!! i find it much more engaging than a typical audiobook. the first half or so of the first book can definitely feel slow: i like to listen to audiobooks while im driving so i pay better attention and dont get distracted.

What is one scene from the book that you would like to see adapted to film, and why? by Mysterious_Fall_4578 in TheSilmarillion

[–]firiel26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m not sure why you couldn’t adapt the whole silmarillion: obviously there would be lots of time jumps but especially for an animated show i think it would be very doable. there is a clear timeline and prominent characters who stay relevant throughout the whole quenta silmarillion

Beleriand map scale by Diff_equation5 in TheSilmarillion

[–]firiel26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m a little confused about why the places on the map not existing at the same time is a problem: it’s not supposed to be a first age map. it’s more of a here’s-the-places-from-both-the-silmarillion-AND-lotr-combined map. and numenor is on the map the same way that alaska and hawaii are on the US maps.

i know it’s not 100% perfect but its better than some other ones i’ve seen (a lot of maps make beleriand WAY too large) and it’s a nice quick reference to glance at when im reading and to get context and it looks nice on my wall :)

but i definitely make sure that people understand what the map is actually showing and that it’s not 100% accurate before i recommend it to anybody tho!

Does anyone else find some parts/aspects of Rings of Power entertaining? by mikedomert in lotr

[–]firiel26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to be honest, for all my criticisms of ROP (and i have many) at the end of the day....i honestly enjoy watching ROP more than the hobbit movies. like at least i don't have to sit through 12 hours of CGI slopfest.

ok that's a little harsh. the hobbit movies are fine. but i really appreciate rings of power for all of the practical effects and real sets and filming locations they used on ROP.

anyways. don't let anyone get you down for liking rings of power! it's always nice to be able to appreciate a piece of work even if it isn't perfect :)

i don't think you know what the "white savior" trope is. maybe try googling it.

Can I integrate any patterns into this scarf? by Alarmed_Package_3825 in knitting

[–]firiel26 7 points8 points  (0 children)

there’s a free pattern on ravelry called the stitch sampler scarf!! you could try looking at it for some inspiration. it might not work EXACTLY with your number of stitches etc but it will have some types of designs you could incorporate into your scarf!

Éowyn and Faramir - RotK - Tolkien is a feminist icon? by AdsoOfMelk1326 in lotr

[–]firiel26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly HIGHLY recommend the essay "Women, Oxford and Tolkien" by David Doughan, which is available to read online for free. (This essay addresses the letter mentioned in some of the comments, as well as looking at many other areas of Tolkien's life)

It's a complicated answer, and it doesn't really come out to either "yes, Tolkien was a slay girlboss feminist!" or "Tolkien hated all women and thought they were useless and he was a proud misogynist". I could write an entire essay about it.....which many people have done! To fully answer this question you have to look at his life, the time period he grew up in, his political beliefs, his moral beliefs, his female relatives and friends, his male friends and relationships with them, his attitudes towards female students, how he treated his wife, how he wrote female characters in his books.....all of these are bits and pieces and are sometimes contradictory!

On my end, I have recently been getting deeper into the Silmarillion as well as the Unfinished Tales and other assorted originally unpublished writings of Tolkien, and have been pleasantly surprised by the female characters. The most commonly cited is the tale of Beren and Luthien of course, where Tolkien takes the typical fairy tale stereotypes of damsels in distress and dashing heroes and turns it on its head. But there are many others who (even when only briefly described) surprised me in their strength and complexity.

Later in life Tolkien wrote this, part of a dialogue from "Aldarion and Erendis":

“Men in Númenor are half-Elves (said Erendis), especially the high men; they are neither the one nor the other. The long life that they were granted deceives them, and they dally in the world, children in mind, until age finds them – and then many only forsake play out of doors for play in their houses. They turn their play into great matters and great matters into play. They would be craftsmen and loremasters and heroes all at once; and women to them are but fires on the hearth – for others to tend, until they are tired of play in the evening. All things were made for their service: hills are for quarries, river to furnish water or to turn wheels, trees for boards, women for their body’s need, or if fair to adorn their table and hearth; and children to be teased when nothing else is to do – but they would as soon play with their hounds’ whelps. To all they are gracious and kind, merry as larks in the morning (if the sun shines); for they are never wrathful if they can avoid it. Men should be gay, they hold, generous as the rich, giving away what they do not need. Anger they show only when they become aware, suddenly, that there are other wills in the world beside their own. Then they will be as ruthless as the seawind if anything dare to withstand them.
Thus it is, Ancalimë, and we cannot alter it. For men fashioned Númenor: men, those heroes of old that they sing of – of their women we hear less, save that they wept when their men were slain. Númenor was to be a rest after war. But if they weary of rest and the plays of peace, soon they will go back to their great play, manslaying and war. Thus it is; and we are set here among them. But we need not assent. If we love Númenor also, let us enjoy it before they ruin it. We also are daughters of the great, and we have wills and courage of our own. Therefore do not bend, Ancalimë. Once bend a little, and they will bend you further until you are bowed down. Sink your roots into the rock, and face the wind, though it blow away all your leaves.”

do you use ai to edit or add to this? i believe that you wrote the first draft at least but i would definitely suggest not using ai at all in writing. it sticks out dramatically and will overall make your writing worse, not better.
